Video: "Harry Potter" Battle in NYC's Grand Central Station

By Christopher Campbell | Spout November 10, 2010 at 3:19AM

I thought that this "Harry Potter" invasion of Grand Central Station was another Improv Everywhere stunt, but as far as I can tell they aren't (yet) taking credit for it. And they probably won't, because as annoying and unfunny as they are, Improv Everywhere is still better than this. They appropriately send Ghostbusters into the old NYC Public Library building and somewhat wittingly reenact Princess Leia's capture by Darth Vader in a subway car (they also do many non-movie-related flashmob events). Their version of this sort of incident would likely be better placed within the Grand Concourse, I think. Or, if they were going to bother with something at Grand Central, I would really hope they'd go with a more appropriate ballroom dance flash mob inspired by "The Fisher King." By the way, what occurs in this video is not a flash mob, as much as it's being called that around the web. A handful of Death Eaters does not constitute a mob. Sorry.

So if it's not Improv Everywhere's band of out-of-work actor hipsters doing this, who is it? Next Movie weighs the possibilities of it being either an official marketing stunt for the upcoming first part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" or simply a bunch of fans having fun on Halloween. It seems the latter is the more likely truth, especially if the video was indeed shot on the holiday. Decent costumes, though, if that's the case. And either way, I'm more annoyed with Improv Everywhere now than ever for potentially influencing this sort of thing. Not that I'm doing any less encouraging by posting it. Watch the video after the jump.
