MTR opening remarks
Thank you Stuart. It’s an honor to be here – Moderating at the Museum of Radio and Television this discussion on the Passion of the Partisan. And I’m pleased to be able show a clip from “Inside the Bubble” for the first time here. Hopefully it will generate some spirited debate once we get the entire panel up on the stage. But I wanted to set the stage with a few thoughts about the word – Partisan. It’s both motivating and divisive. If a partisan is a passionate truth telling – then count me in. But if a partisan is simply a disruptive proselytizer… then not so fast. This is a panel of passionate filmmakers. Of that – I’m quite sure. But this is complex and troubling time for storytellers… many of whom find the power of partisanship both intoxicating and overwhelming. And make no mistake – these are Partisan times. Lines are being drawn. In government. In the judiciary. And in the media. Things are black or white. Good or Bad. Left or Right. Filmmakers don’t existing in a bubble. They live in the same world you do. A divided world. Few would disagree that a spirited debate is at the heart of a vibrant democracy. But documentary films are debates in which there is always a hand that controls the outcome of the debate that occurs on the screen. Are partisan filmmakers simply the honest few who are willing to out themselves as having a point of view? Are they brave – or self serving. The simple fact is 2004 will forever change the role of the partisan filmmaker. Political Documentaries will for ever be known as “Before” and “After” Fahrenheit 9/11. It is the film that changed everything. In fact – it changed Two BIG things. First, Michael Moore, a filmmaker with a point of view came out and said so. Didn’t coyly suggest that there was a black and and a white hat. Michael Moore knew who the “bad guy” was –and he was very public about it. Secondly – he stubbornly, steadfastly, bullheadedly insisted that his film be in theatres BEFORE the election. He didn’t want to ‘observe’ or ‘chronicle’ or ‘shadow’ the process – he wanted to impact it. We’re talking about the passion of the Partisan – And asking about the future of the political documentary today – So let’s start at the beginning. Bob Drew. A Pioneer. A visionary. With the spirit of a life magazine photographer – he saw a future that would turn that tradition into moving images. And put together a remarkable team. The films were truly the start of something audiences had NEVER seen before. Primary. Yank No! Crisis. The Chair. Let’s welcome Bob Drew… and take a look a few minutes of his work. PLAY CLIP.
