Inside 9/11 on National Geographic Channel
My point is - I've gotten to a place where we just routinely turn down requests for footage that has been seen, or used in any of the films we've made or worked on. So when Towers Productions approached us about using the CameraPlanet Archive as a resource for their series - we made them an unusual offer "if you invest the resources in having a producer look at material that has never been used by anyone before, we'll work as a partner to make sure that viewers will see new images and hear new stories about 9/11." The folks at Towers agreed, and we are the largest single archive in the Nat Geo Series - with almost 70% of the total archival material coming from CPA. This is the way footage should be engaged - with a thorough and careful fresh look at what is available, rather than a hurried approach that presumes that all the known images tell the whole story. Knowing the footage that Towers acquired, I can tell you that viewers will get to see some new points of view tonight - if that is what you're ready for. Special thanks to Jessica Berman-Bogdan of Global Image Works/Footage Finders for her endless patience and unfailingly good humor in getting the series made, and to Dan Luskin who worked on our team to pull these never before seen images. And of course, our deeply felt appreciation to Jonathan Towers and Sarah Huisenga at Towers Productions and Michael Cascio at The National Geographic Channel for their commitment to quality and unfailing determination to make these hours the best they could be. This is a topic that deserves extraordinary respect and patient and careful filmmaking - and this team worked hard to do the right thing at every turn. I heard about your 9/11 program on CBS world news tonight. I was dissapointed to see that you have opted to show this ONLY on your own pay-per-view cable channel. This disgusts me beyond words. National Geographic has finally shown itself to be the money-grubbing self-interested orgainization that you are. Cancel my subscription to your magazine and immediately and refund my outstanding payment for future issues. Christopher C. Burt Posted by christopher c burt on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM Christopher Burt, I watched this tonight, and it was not on a pay-per-view channel but on the National Geographic Channel, which is part of my digital cable service. Lighten up on the boycotting and just pay for the extra channels. Posted by Chris Hagan on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM I watch the program and it showed what I belive all along that our Gov tied there own hands because a leader paid more attention to the woman around him than the safety of the people of this country. I read some of the comments that it should have been showed in prime time TV. I belive that no major network would show this because this would show that Clinton drop the ball and cause the 9/11 to happen. Posted by Cahrles Rayfield on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM Clinton is not the only one who dropped the ball. While play was in his court for quite some time, Bush had many warnings from different agencies, including the outgoing Clinton admin. Who tied who's hands? There were so many factors that lead to the dissolving of prime opputunities to dismantle the current terrorist regime, that you have to agree that beaurucrats around the world are at fault. Also, as stated in the documentary, Clinton was taking steps to address these threats, but pressure from the sex scandal forced his attention away. Many people, myself included, believed that Clinton launched missle strikes in the Mid-East to distract the public's attention from the "oral office" issue. It sounds to me like you're ready to hang Clinton by his ears no matter what he does. Nobody's perfect. Posted by matts on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM I watched last nights program and it makes me sick to think that the world could have been so blind, I mean there were so many warnings. And I agree that Clinton fired those missles to distract the country from his sex scandle. I am very glad that this program has aired and I will watch the rest tonight. America has forgotten about September the 11th and they need a major reminder. Whenever I see the footage of those planes crashing into the towers, and footage of the rubble of the Pentegon and flight 93 I get that sick feeling in my stomach. Christopher Richardson Posted by Christopher Richardson on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM Hah, another fool who thinks they're out to destroy terrorism and are spreading freedom at the same time. Posted by CaptainObvious on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM For anyone who hasn't been able to read beneath the headlines over the past several years, I found the documentary incredibly informative. NG put it together so seamlessly that even though I've been exposed to all the pieces before, they didn't really make sense to me until last night. My one critique of the 4-hour show is that the last half hour was very rushed. I expected more on the pros/cons of Homeland Security and our lovely rainbow-colored warning system. 9/11 upset me then, and it still upsets me now. Now, my emotions are more out of anger than sadness - because NG showed how this could have been prevented. Still, I couldn't help but cry when I saw the first plane enter the North tower for the hundredth time. Posted by Mike on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM Dear Captain Obvious, Posted by Dave Agnew on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM We've all seen the footage a hundred times now. Yet the sound of the FDNY PASS devices going off after their wearers had been dead or dying for hours just pierced my heart. Yet at the same time, the story of the Jew and the Muslim helping each other in a moment of need was heartwarming and refreshing in the face of such destruction. This program, in my opinion, was very well made. It pointed out that the bureaucrats are not perfect. Nor is our system or our political dealings. But it also touched on the bigger issue...one that exists in those that are so fanatical and extremist that they are willing to kill indiscriminately or be killed to continue centuries of bloodshed. Seems to me (and I admit a rather biased view) that a life spent in pursuit of personal martyrdom and murder is a potentially positive life wasted. Posted by Cathy on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM well said cathy Posted by dave agnew on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM I watched the program and I found part 1 to be very educational/informative. Before watching part 1, I never really understood the connections between the war that started with Bush I and many other news-stories and events that followed for several years afterward. I do wish that National Geographic would play it a few more times this month. And I do think that it would be more effective if they would place it on regular tv (not cable); but that's their perrogative. As far as "blame" is concerned. I don't think that people in this country realize that the president does not run the country, he leads it. During the Clinton administration, his congress was too busy handling issues that had absolutely nothing to do with the affairs of this country, that they failed to work on what was REALLY important_ protecting the USA from a dangerous terrorist operation. Posted by Nikki on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM there's a good space for discussion about 9/11 here: http://www.cameraplanet.com/7days/ it's open to any one to post Posted by steve on Aug 21, 2005 at 05:05PM I thank National Geographic for the airing of this program. I only wish that every American could have watched. Too many Americans have forgotten that tragic morning and they need a reminder of the horror we all felt that day. I cried as I watched and the chills and fear that I felt on 911 flooded over me as it did on that horrible, horrible day! My daughter is a flight attendant and was in the air that morning and no one will ever know what I went through until the call came to me that her flight was on the ground and she was safe. I will never FORGET that day.........I pray that it does not take another 911 to wake this country up to the task ahead of us in fighting terrorism!
