There Is a "Classy" Side to Oscar Campaigning, But It's Controversial

It's not always a shill factor for Oscars
Films illuminated via screenings, talks with stars, directors

Los Angeles - Hype and more hype - that's what most people think Oscar campaigning is all about.

But there is another side, one far different from the inane talk-show appearances and "for your consideration" advertisements in newspapers and trade publications. It's a classy and almost scholarly one that goes mostly unnoticed outside L.A. (and New York) but is nevertheless hugely influential.

It attempts to take serious movies seriously by having those involved in making them attend public screenings, tributes and lectures - often at museums and cinematheques - to discuss their work and themselves.
