These last 10 days have been so full (and rather redundant), I’ve had little time to write in the journal/blog, so here’s a recap:
The process:
1- after we interview someone for the film, we then make audio tapes of the interview
2- Then Luci or my Mom (Ellie) transcribes the audio tape word for word, um, uhs and you knows included (my typing skills are so poor, it’s far more efficient if I stay out of this part of the process)
3- Next, we read the transcripts and highlight parts we think are going to be good for the film
4- We then sit down and watch the tape, as the highlighted part comes around, we write down the time code next to it. This will be our cue for digitizing later.
5- And lastly, we have compiled all the highlights into one document under categories, i.e. religion, childhood, trauma, etc. We can copy, paste and delete to the point of having a rough “script” to save time and hard drive space in editing.
It all sounds so simple when I write it, but we had to do this for 60+ hours of interview footage. All these steps make it so much easier to sort through the material before we digitize it into the computer.
Due to our constant travel over the last 5 months, we fell pretty far behind in this whole process and just now are we starting to see the light of day. As of yesterday, we have finally caught up and as the last few tapes come in transcribed, we can quickly put it through the process and get a little closer to editing!
So these steps have taken up the majority of the days (and nights) and in the meantime, we have launched our grass roots fund raising efforts (responses are already coming back), had visitors from Germany, went to a couple IFP parties and saw Green Day play for free near City Hall.
