Friday
We got to Bev’s around 10am and had some coffee and discussed the day ahead of us. We decided to talk about some of the more emotionally upsetting things today and get them out of the way. Ten minutes into the interview, just as Bev is recounting a very sensitive time in her childhood, our key light went out. We set up another light as fast as we could and resumed taping. Bev hasn’t told her story in great detail before and it proves to be difficult, but she gets through it. The lights we bought for the shoot are proving to be cheap and very brittle. Live and learn. After 4 hours, we’re all very drained. We decide it would probably best for everyone if Luci and I go to the hotel and let Bev be with her family.
It’s difficult to explain the impact of listening to someone’s trauma when you aren’t a professional therapist. It’s a consequence I foresaw before embarking on the film, but after a day like today, I’m smacked in the face (and heart) with the after effects. Luci and I feed ourselves and relax the best we can. This will prove to be the most difficult day of taping so far.
