Thursday

We came to an agreement with the Church as to the terms of the interview and they will be part of the film. This is great news. We weren’t sure if this would ever work out. Looks like we’ll be going out there at the end of October.

I met with Tara Wray for drinks. She’s in the process of making an incredibly emotional and personal doc. It was really great to share experiences of this mostly isolated process.

Got home in time for the debates. Was is just me or did George W. look really nervous? I would to if I knew I was about to be fired.

Wednesday

Had a nice meeting with our lawyer at the playground in Brooklyn and David Teague came over with his fine-tuned Super 8 projector to view and transfer some Super 8 films we picked up from the Darr’s. It’s all Kodachrome from the late 70’s and it stills looks pristine.

Tuesday

Took our friends to Newark and returned in the beginnings of the downpour.

Luci and I went to Amanda Doss and Bo Mehrad’s fundraiser for their new short film, Thirsty. It was at The Remote Lounge. We had a great time and they had a large turnout despite the rain.

One of our umbrellas went missing and had to return huddled under one due to the massive collection of standard issue New York $5 black ‘brellas piled at the front door. I’m sure it was an oversight, but we were drenched by the time we got home.

Monday

Received another tape from Mom, printed and timed it. Spent the afternoon with our visitors in Manhattan.

Sunday

Went to Jeff and Jimmy Israel’s birthday party last night. Saw a bunch of old friends and met some new and interesting people as well. Ran into Alice Wu and was able to congratulate her personally for her film’s success in Toronto. Wish I had a digital camera to put the iPOP on the indieWIRE attendees, i.e. Brian and Eugene, but you’ll just have to take my word for it.

Tuesday, September 14th Saturday, September 25th

These last 10 days have been so full (and rather redundant), I’ve had little time to write in the journal/blog, so here’s a recap:

The process:

1- after we interview someone for the film, we then make audio tapes of the interview

2- Then Luci or my Mom (Ellie) transcribes the audio tape word for word, um, uhs and you knows included (my typing skills are so poor, it’s far more efficient if I stay out of this part of the process)

3- Next, we read the transcripts and highlight parts we think are going to be good for the film

4- We then sit down and watch the tape, as the highlighted part comes around, we write down the time code next to it. This will be our cue for digitizing later.

5- And lastly, we have compiled all the highlights into one document under categories, i.e. religion, childhood, trauma, etc. We can copy, paste and delete to the point of having a rough “script” to save time and hard drive space in editing.

It all sounds so simple when I write it, but we had to do this for 60+ hours of interview footage. All these steps make it so much easier to sort through the material before we digitize it into the computer.

Due to our constant travel over the last 5 months, we fell pretty far behind in this whole process and just now are we starting to see the light of day. As of yesterday, we have finally caught up and as the last few tapes come in transcribed, we can quickly put it through the process and get a little closer to editing!

So these steps have taken up the majority of the days (and nights) and in the meantime, we have launched our grass roots fund raising efforts (responses are already coming back), had visitors from Germany, went to a couple IFP parties and saw Green Day play for free near City Hall.

Monday

Spent the majority of the day on household chores and errands. Cleaned Buster up for an interested buyer.

Worked on transcriptions and drafted an approach letter to interview someone from the C&MA.

Saturday

A slow paced day that ended with a bike ride down to Red Hook to watch the sun set over New York Harbor, then dinner at Hope and Anchor and a beer at Sunny’s.

Friday

Felt the effects of staying up late for most of the day, but was able to get some things accomplished. Hung out with some more friends at night and all around, a good day. The weather couldn’t have been better. It’s hauntingly similar to the weather 3 years ago.

Thursday

Finished the audio dubs and printing transcriptions. Getting closer to the editing. I can’t wait to dive in. Drafted another approach letter for an integral element of the film.

Luci and I went to Sin-e to see the Reid Paley Trio and Peg Simone. The bar is really out of the way if you don’t live in the East Village or Lower East Side. Both shows sounded great, although the turn out should’ve been better for a Thursday night.

It was good to see so many friends that we haven’t seen for a while. It feels like its been forever since we’ve been out in the city.

Wednesday

Began making audio dubs and reading transcripts. Watched "Fog of War" until Pilot Season came on. Won’t comment on the Oscar winner until I finish watching it. I will say the jumpcuts seem to undercut it's credibility some. We'll see.

September 07, 2004

Tuesday

Finished making video dubs and put together the fund raising package.

Matt had much more screen time tonight. He’s great.

September 06, 2004

Monday

Got unpacked and began planning the week. We are going to start a grass roots fund raise. I’ll announce the details soon if you want to help or donate.

Started the video dubs.

A friend of ours, Matt Weiss, in Trio’s new series, Pilot Season so we had a few friends over for grilling and TV. Matt made a brief appearance at the end of the 2nd episode. Can’t wait to see more. We’ll be tuning in all week. It’s the first time a friend of ours has been on a series. Cool and weird all at once. I’m relieved to say, the show is really funny and well acted. New episodes are at 9:30 all this week.

Luci noticed the lights at ground zero have been lit. We can see them from our bedroom window.

Friday-Sunday

We spent last night with my aunt and uncle in Metamora. We all drove into Peoria for dinner at a great Irish place near the water.

We had to return equipment in Chicago by 1, so we pulled out around 10. We made it to Fletcher a little late, but no biggie. We dropped off the equipment and made it into downtown to check into our posh reward to ourselves for completing this phase of the film Hotel 71. We arrived before check in and sat in the lounge waiting for 3 o’clock to roll around. Finally got into the room. Awesome! A corner room on the 30th floor overlooking downtown. By being on the corner, we had 2 walls of windows. It’s the first time we’ve stayed in a “boutique” hotel where everything has design taken into account. It was very refreshing despite the extra $$$.

This would be the 4th hotel in 8 days. They all start to blend together after a while. Through most of our travels, we’ve been staying at Comfort Inns. They’re a part of Choice Hotels International and through the AIVF, we receive a 20% discount. Their mid-priced fare fits our mid-priced pockets and recent renovations make them for the most part, nice places.

Spent a lot of time walking around Chicago’s downtown and shorelines both Saturday and Sunday. Chicago’s great, but once you live in New York, nothing is really that impressive. Sorry, but it’s true.

We flew out of O’Hare around 1 and got back to Brooklyn by 7. A total success in travel.

Thursday

Luci and I will spend the next few days vacationing in Chicago and will return to New York on Sunday.

We’ve been watching closely all of our fellow New Yorkers protesting. Keep up the good fight! Hang in there, it’s almost over and all those uninvited guests will leave.

And now it looks as if all our friends and family in Florida are going to have to deal with another hurricane. Our thoughts are with you.

Wednesday

We went over to Rich’s house around noon. We looked through a couple of reference books on missions. We learned a lot about the structure of all the mission sending agencies and statistics concerning money earned, raised and spent. It’s really unbelievable.

Rich made arrangements for Jim McDonald to come by and be taped. He served as Pastoral Counsel for the steering committee form the very beginning. Donna, Rich’s wife, and Rich bought us lunch at a great Greek restaurant called Louie’s. It was delicious!

We made it back in time to meet Jim at the Minooka Methodist Church where Rich is the Pastor. It made for a beautiful backdrop for an interview. We got some B roll of Rich at the pulpit and shots of the huge stain glass windows. We all went back to the house and Donna cooked a great dinner. Grilled chicken, frittatas, asparagus and fruit. The highlight was sweet corn on the cob picked from the field that morning. If you’ve ever been out to Illinois, you know corn is a local crop. It’s everywhere! Dinner was delicious and the conversation was great. It was a perfect wrap party for finishing the major leg of the film.

It’s official: we have taped all the family interviews. We realized, it was one year Tuesday that we had began taping with Ann & Howard and Howie Beardslee. We had coffee and cake and at 10:30, it was time to say good-bye and head back to the hotel.

This has been a truly amazing experience and we feel so privileged to have met and been invited into the lives of each of the families. They have all been so very open and honest as well as hospitable and kind. We’ve enjoyed every minute with everyone (even the emotionally difficult times). I just want to take a little time to say thank you to all of them. We can’t wait to see everyone again at screenings!
