Keeping Austin Weird

SXSW Film Festival and Conference producer Matt Dentler with director/star Luke Wilson at the opening night party Friday night. Wilson's film, "The Wendell Baker Story", which he co-directed with his brother, Andrew, opened the festival, and was the film's world premiere.

Saturday afternoon, Luke along with his brothers Andrew and Owen, and cast held a press conference for the film. Owen Wilson praised Austin for being a good place to shoot, commenting, "There's more of an appreciation for eccentric characters here." Many of the locals seem to agree. A number of people proudly sport "Keep Austin Weird" t-shirts.

The film, which some praised and others were more critical of, is described as the story of "a good-hearted ex-con who gets a job at a retirement community where he joins forces with the elderly to fight corruption and win back his girlfriend."

Did anyone happen to see the two gorgeous blonde Newman sisters that were there? VaVaVaVoom! The Texas girls were meeting with several movie producers about making their true story, "No Greater Deception," into a film and TV series. Several producers left with copies of their new book under their arm. Why shoot fiction when you can shoot a true story? Right?
