The New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF), the premier Latino film festival in the country is presented by HBO® and opens its 13th edition with FILLY BROWN, starring breakout actress Gina Rodriguez and closes with LEMON, the raw story of three-time felon and one-time Tony Award winner, spoken word artist Lemon Andersen.

President Obama signed the JOBS ACT; its Equity Crowdfunding may rebuild indie film biz. Called the ‘‘Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act,’’ the goal is to increase American job creation and economic growth by improving access to the public capital markets for emerging growth companies. It will make it easier for small businesses to raise money so they can create jobs and rebuild the American economy by amending the Securities Act of 1933. It can have a profound impact on the independent filmmaking industry.

Summer in New York City is the time of picnics in the park, lazy beach days, outdoor movie screenings, sweaty subway rides, and all-around fun. The summertime is also Gay Pride Parade season in most cities. Naturally, many gay film festivals take place around this time of year as well. NewFest--New York's LGBT Film Festival--is no exception. Now in its 24th year--running July 27 through 31--the festival is taking over Lincoln Center with a compelling program of narratives, documentaries, shorts and panels.

Applications are accepted for feature-length, narrative film projects in all stages of production by directors from eligible nations of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Oceania. Applications will be accepted until July 16, 2012, and granting decisions are announced in October 2012.*

Sundance Film Festival shows a persistent and invariable trend of showcasing first-time directors. In 2012 alone, 44 of the 112 feature-film selections were crafted by first-time directors, and a handful of others had made their debuts at Sundance in years past.
