Berkeley Student goes to Cannes to serve as a Jurist and Critic

As the recipient of a College to Cannes award from the San Francisco Film Society and French Consulate, Ryan Lattanzio, freshly graduated from UC Berkeley, will take an all-expenses-paid trip to be a jurist and critic at the Cannes Film Festival wher he will share an apartment with three other students — from South Korea, Belgium and India — who together will select the 2012 Cannes “Visionary Award” for a fledgling independent filmmaker.

Canadian and International filmmakers are invited to submit films of all lengths and genres by the following deadlines: May 31 for early film submissions (discount on application); June 29 for short films; and July 6 for feature films.

Looking at the Cannes Film Festival Competition, Un Certain Regard and Critics Week titles, the top international sales agents are Wild Bunch with with12 films. U.S. has 7 indies in Competition and Out of Competition. Latin America has 17 in all sections. Not one female directors has a film in Competition though of late they just added one doc Out of Competition, 2 have "special" berths at Critic's Week and 2 are in Un Certain Regard; 2 are in Directors Fortnight. All but 2 are French!

When the film premiered in Cuba at the Festival Internacional de Nuevo Cine Latino in Havana, the lines snaked around the block. Everywhere it’s played extra screenings have been added. And even with worldwide sales Alejandro Brugués stays humble. I asked him what would happen if he was a zombie. “Oh that’s easy. I’m the most useless person in the world. I’m a director and all I know how to do is make films. I would be the first one that would get eaten.”
