CJ Entertainment, the ubiquitous South Korean distributor, exhibitor (theaters in L.A., So. Korea, et al.), international sales agent, production company, whose vast parent company has so many other vertical type industries - is in the news again.
CJ Entertainment Japan (ＣＪエンタテインメント・ジャパン), the biggest new arrival on the Japanese distribution scene for years, has set out its first full year releasing slate.It comprises over a dozen releases planned for 2011. Created last year, the company is a joint venture between South Korea’s CJ Entertainment (CJ엔터테인먼트) and Japanese exhibitor T-Joy (ティ・ジョイ). Highlights include baseball drama G-Love (글러브), 3-D creature action film Sector 7 (7광구), noir thriller Blue Salt (푸른 소금), bike actioner Quick (퀵) and 3-D family fare Tarbosaurus (pictured), though all are undated.
South Korean recording artist BoA (real name Kwon Bo-ah 권보아) will co-star in Cobu 3D, a U.S.-set dance movie that is being backed by CJ Entertainment (CJ엔터테인먼트). Duane Adler (writer of Save The Last Dance and Step Up) will direct the project from his own script. Production is by Robert Cort of Cort Productions alongside Lee Soo-man (이수만), Eric Hetzel and Patricia Chun. "We are producing and investing in Cobu 3D with SM and Cort Production," CJ's Mike Suh told Film Business Asia. SM Entertainment (SM엔터테인먼트) is BoA's talent management representative and one of Korea's most powerful entertainment firms.
Lionsgate International will handle sales in territories outside the trio of Korea, Japan and China that will go to CJ.
