Deutsche Welle represents Germany in the international media landscape. It acts as a sort of Voice of America for Germany.

Deutsche Welle has been on the air since May 3, 1953.  Today, the focus is on intercultural dialogue. They were broadcasting in more than 30 languages by 1980 --

in Arabic and Kiswahili, Indonesian and Urdu, Russian and Spanish, German and English

and since 1992 have offered television worldwide via satellite. In 1994 DW branched out to the Internet as the first public broadcaster in Germany to go online.

Germany’s international broadcaster conveys the country as a nation rooted in European culture and as a liberal, democratic state based on the rule of law.

As part of its statutory mission, DW works independently to present events and developments in Germany and the world and picks up on German and other points of view on important issues.  It

fulfills this mission with a full range of television, radio and online services.

It promotes exchange and understanding between the world's cultures and people.

DW is known for its in-depth, reliable news.

Deutsche Welle is regulated by public law and financed by federal tax revenue. The annual budget for 2012 is about €271 million. Erik Bettermann has been Director General since 2001. More than 1,500 employees and hundreds of freelancers from 60 countries work in our headquarters in Bonn and in Berlin.

Their DW Akademie provides advanced media training for media professionals, journalists, documentary producers, technicians and managers from around the world.  DW Akademie makes further education a reality with traineeships and a master's program. It’s all part of a concept based on sustainable media development.

The Deutsche-Welle Akademie is now hosting the ninth Film Festival and Event Management Workshop, a 5 week course in film festival management for invited festival managers from Africa, Asia and now, for the first year, Latin America in cooperation with the Berlinale management. The workshop is for international managers and organizers of film festivals. This year twelve participants from Africa, Asia and, for the first time, Latin America will take part. They look at festival promotion strategies and learn more about funding, organization and film selection. They also have an opportunity to see how the Berlinale itself is run and meet and network with those involved.

Of her connection with DW Akademie Sydney Levine says, "Two days of the course is dedicated to learning about the international independent film business which I have been teaching for the past several years.  This was the first year in which the festivals totally understood the need to place themselves as players in The Annual Film Business Fest and Market Circuit and to see themselves as possibly more formal distributors as well as festivals serving a purpose of spreading films’ accessibility.  There is a day of solid in class lecture and feedback and then a practical day when we actually tour the inside of a major Film Market here in Berlin, the EFM European Film Market."

This year the student group was composed of the following international film festival directors, many of whom are active filmmakers and also working in various areas of the film business, such as distribution and exhibition.
