Last Friday night saw a celebration of the biggest names in the Latino Hollywood being honored for achievement in television, film, music and activism. “Because we’re on MSNBC we gotta talk a little politics, right?” quipped host Mario Lopez as he kicked off the ALMA Awards co-presenting with executive producer Eva Longoria in the first time the award show has been broadcast live in its 13 years (we could have gotten more than an hour of airtime!)

This year saw a change in format and honorees were selected for their contributions across the spectrum of Latino arts and included director Robert Rodriguez (recipient of the Anthony Quinn Award for Industry Excellence) and the cast of Filly Brown , which was recognized for “Special Achievement in Film.”

Latino cast members of Dexter– actors Lauren Vélez, David Zayas and Aimee Garcia — were also honored for “Special Achievement in Television.” And in a new honor presented at this years event – the “Outstanding Commitment to Cause and Community” award was deservingly given both to legend Carlos Santana and to actress Rosario Dawson who was recognized for her work with the Lower East Side Girls Club and Voto Latino . LatinoBuzz homie Jessica Molina was on the red carpet and we have pics. Thanks to Laura Sixtos for the pictures! Felicidades to everyone and be sure to check out past LatinoBuzz interviews with some of the red carpet stars!
