Mr. Kim Goes to Festivals

The Pusan festival (부산국제영화제) has published Mr. Kim Goes to Festivals, a collection of essays by outgoing festival director Kim Dong-ho (김동호), giving his personal opinion on 38 of his favourite film festivals.

In the book, Kim argues that "more and more Korean filmmakers and producers seem to make films with the specific aim of entering them at film festivals" and encourages them to look beyond Cannes, Berlin and Venice.

He suggests that the "dearth of Korean films in the Berlinale Competition is due to Korean filmmakers' infatuation with Cannes". Nevertheless, he personally looks forward to the day that a Korean film wins the Palme d'Or.

Kim's first international film festival was the August 1988 edition of the Montreal World Film Festival, followed by a visit to the Moscow International Film Festival the following year.

After the first edition of the Pusan festival in 1996, he became a frequent traveller to film festivals overseas, during which time he has collected more than 1.5 million air miles on Korean Air.

The core of the book came from a series of articles Kim wrote for the local edition of Premiere magazine between 2003 and 2005 and in a weekly column in Pusan's Kookje Shinmoon (국제신문) newspaper this year.

The 300-page book is edited by festival programmer Cho Young-jung (조영정) with introductions by director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), journalist Peter van Bueren and Thierry Fremeux, artistic director of Cannes.
