Oscar Short List of Academy Award Best Foreign Language Film

Nine films – seven out of them produced in Europe - will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 85th Academy Awards. The shortlist will be winnowed down to the five nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles. The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10. Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013.


The contenders include:

Amour , film focus - Michael Haneke - Austria


A Royal Affair, film focus - Nikolaj Arcel - Denmark


The Untouchables - Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano - France


The Deep - Baltasar Kormákur - Iceland


Kon-Tiki - Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg - Norway

Beyond the Hills, film focus - Cristian Mungiu - Romania


Sisterfilm focus- Ursula Meier – Switzerland

War Witch - Kim Nguyen - Canada

No - Pablo Larraín - Chile

    At this point, I'm wiling to bet "The Intouchables" is going to take the prize. It's milquetoast, pedestrian, trite, and gushing with faux-sentimentality - it's just the piece of garbage academy voters love. It it wasn't French, it would probably win Best Picture. I'll say though, this seems like a better-than-usual short list. "Amour," "Beyond the Hills," and "Sister" are all fine films, and probably the best among which were submitted by the foreign countries' film academies
