To begin with ioncinema's The Buyer's Club: Top 20 Films for Sale at TIFF 2010 (for U.S. rights) in Toronto seems as good a place to begin as any. In this upcoming Rights Roundup for the Fall Festivals and Markets, I'll mark ion's chosen titles and we'll watch the sales on them as much as possible.
I am listing all the ISAs who are here in Toronto or who have reported rights sold in Cannes, however I am only highlighting those currently with films in the fall festivals or whose film sales hit the trades during these days. The list will swell as we get to AFM and will be updated with bold lettering. Since I begin with Toronto, covering much of Venice,Telluride, Locarno and Montreal as well, and since I will keep updating the document through AFM, eventually the report will be too large for this blog and I will move it to another link by the time AFM rolls around in November. Hahaha, a prize-winner in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sold to Les Acacias for France, P&I Distribution for former USSR territories and Emphasis Entertainment for worldwide in-flight rights. This is in addition to a previous deal with Catchplay for Taiwan. Poetry sold to Mokep for Hungary, Edko Films for Hong Kong and Emphasis Entertainment for worldwide in-flight rights. These sales are in addition to post-Cannes deals with Diaphana (France), Kino-Lorber (US), Golem (Spain), and Lumiere (Benelux). Carancho in Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema section premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard this year, and sold to Golem for Spain, Strand Releasing for US, and Clipartfilms for Greece.I Saw The Devil sold to Magnolia for No. America. It was a TIFF North American Premiere after its Pusan FF debut. Next, it goes to San Sebastian. Pre-Toronto, it was presold off of its 12 minute footage in Cannes Market to France’s ARP and to England’s Optimum, Taiwan’s Catchplay and Turkey’s Bir. It is scheduled for Korean release in summer this year. French distributor ARP previously released Kim’s last film, The Good, The Bad, The Weird, which premiered in an out of competition slot at Cannes in 2008.

Sales Representatives are Media Asia for Asia and Focus for the rest of the world. Sales were made to Well Go for U.S. Focus presold it to Optimum for U.K. in a pre-Cannes deal.
Reign of Assassins, co-directed and produced by John Woo sold to California Filmes for Brazil and Madman for Australia/ N.Z. The film will hit theatres in China Sept 28. Casino Jack World Premiere. First day of Toronto: ATO (Art Takes Over) has acquired U.S. theatrical rights and plans a late December release. ATO releases its films theatrically through its partnership with Samuel Goldwyn Films in the distribution entity, IDP (Independent Distribution Partners). The two companies currently have Mao’s Last Dancer. It presold during Cannes where to E1 for Canada, Eagle for the Middle East, Hollywood C.E. for Czech Republic, Inter Medya Hizmetleri Ticaret for Romania, Lusomundo for Portugal, MG Film for Croatia, Monolith for Poland , Soyuz for Russia, Spentzos for Greece, Swen for Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay, Wide Pictures for Spain. In Toronto, CAA had sold the U.S. rights to James Schramm's Metropolitan Inc., but that deal fell through a few weeks ago and so CAA, Rollercoaster's Gary Howsam and Hannibal were pulling out all the plugs in Toronto to line up a U.S. sale. They got it!!

Blue Valentine, TIFF Canadian Premiere. After its Sundance and Cannes premieres it went to Cinematografica Distributori Indipendenti (CDI), The Weinstein Co. for U.S. , Front Row for Middle East, Palace for Australia/ N.Z., Seven Films for Greece.
The Way. Filmax who coproduced has Spain. Word is it's a bit long but otherwise worth acquiring.
West is West, TIFF World Premiere. Pre-Toronto sold it to Ascot Elite for Switzerland.
Insidioussold to SPWA for North America rights in a 7 figure deal brokered with CAA and Paradigm. SPWA has also made a p&a commitment for a theatrical release on 800-1,000 screens. It has already sold to Wild Bunch for France, Ascot Elite for Switzerland, Filmauro for Italy, Korea Screen for So. Korea and Top Film for the Ukraine.

The Solitude of Prime Numbers sold to Spain (Alta), Benelux (Cinemien), Switzerland (Coopi), Israel (New Cinema), Czech Republic (Aero Film), Ex-Yugoslavia (MCF). A U.K. deal is pending. The French-Italian-German co-production will be released by Bavaria in Germany, Medusa in Italy (it is already off to a strong start at the box office after a Sept 10 launch), and Le Pacte in France.
The Locarno title Man At Bath (Homme Au Bain) sold to Benelux (Lumiere) with UK, German and U.S. deals likely to close later this week.
Cannes prizewinner On Tour has further sales to Australia (Aztec), Czech Republic (DNC), Hungary (Suez), ex Yugoslavia (MCF), Italy (Nomad) and UK (Artificial Eye).

I’m Still Here, TIFF North American Premiere after its Venice debut. It’s being repped by William Morris Endeavor. Magnolia is both ISA and U.S. distributor and D Films has Canada. Magnolia has previously sealed deals with Optimum for the UK, Roadshow for Australia and New Zealand.

Image Entertainment has acquired all U.S. rights to Every Day starring Helen Hunt and Liev Schreiber and will release it theatrically January 2011. Alliance Entertainment will distribute in Canada. The film debuted recently in Deauville.
