Călin Peter Netzer's family power drama, Child's Pose, has been selected unanimously by the national jury to be forwarded as Romania's submission for next year's Academy Awards. The 86th edition will take place on 2 March.
Child's Pose won the Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin IFF this year. The film's producer Ada Solomon (who also runs Romania short film festival NeXt) accepted the award with an award winning speech of her own, thanking those who refused to help back the film for making her that much stronger and determined to make it.
Launched in Romania on 8 March, the film broke admissions records and became the most successful domestic film in the last 11 years. It is still showing in local cinemas.
Germany's Beta Cinema has sold the film to territories worldwide, including Australia/ N.Z. - Palace Films, Brazil - Imovision, Denmark - Camera Film A/S, Germany - X Verleih Ag, Greece - Seven Films, Netherlands - Contact Film, Poland - Aurora Films, Portugal - Alambique, Switzerland – Film Coopi, although not yet in the U.S. for which a deal is expected soon. Călin Peter Netzer, premiered in the Official Competition of the Berlinale 2013. The film is a mixture of drama, emotion and humor about the relationship between an overbearing mother and her adult son. Răzvan Rădulescu and Călin Peter Netzer wrote the script and the main characters are played by Luminiţa Gheorghiu (Moartea domnului Lăzărescu/The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu) and Bogdan Dumitrache (Cu cele mai bune intenţii/Best Intentions). Child's Pose is a 100% Romanian production between Parada Film and HaiHui Entertainment. The arrogance of the new middle class in Romania is personified by the mother as she tries to buy her son's way out of guilt for running over the child of a poor family.
