Sandi Dubowski at Sundance

Photo of Sydney Levine By Sydney Levine | Sydneys Buzz January 19, 2011 at 9:00AM

Sandi Dubowski is in Sundance co-hosting a Good Pitch Party (see below) and mentions that, "btw, I got a development grant from a new film fund, Catapult for my project and will be holding meetings at Sundance to raise matching funds for my next film, Soul Trainer." Soul Trainer follows the dramatic life story of Amichai Lau-Lavie whose uncle is the former Chief Rabbi of Israel and who is descended from 37 generations of rabbis to King David. Amichai is Jewish royalty, a link in a 5,771 year-old ancient chain, but he is also the creator of a Hasidic female performance character. His Trembling Before G-d and next film, A Jihad for Love dealt with the delicate details of being homosexual or lesbian in strict fundamentalist religions which prohibit non-heterosexual behavior. His life ever since has revolved around workshops around the world dealing with these issues and has moved into other transcultural issues as in Budrus. WHAT IS A GOOD PITCH PARTY?.

What’s that?

It’s a party to celebrate Good Pitch at Sundance?

What’s Good Pitch?

Good question, it’s an event which brings together filmmakers with NGOs, foundations, philanthropists, brands and media around leading social issues – to forge coalitions and campaigns that are good for all these partners, good for the films and good for society.

Who’s going to be there?

Our partners at the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, Cara Mertes and Patricia Finneran
All our supporters (Fledgling Fund, Chicken and Egg, Working Films, Tides Foundation, Impact Partners, Cross Currents, Hartley Film Foundation, San Francisco Film Society, BAVC and now Ford Foundation), our Outreach Director Sandi DuBowski and friends and many of the filmmakers who have taken part over the past 3 years including:

Pamela Yates and Paco de Onis (The Reckoning and Granito – playing this year!)
Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson (Out in the Silence)
Danfung Dennis (Hell and Back Again – playing this year)
David Sington (The Flaw, also playing this year)
Macky Alston (The Truth Will Set You Free)
Michele Stephenson (An American Promise)
Steve James (The Interrupters – playing this year!)
Rosa Rogers (Casablanca Calling)
Nicole Newnham & Maren Grainger Monsen (The Revolutionary Optimists)
