Early predictions have emerged for most Academy Award categories. As the studios reveal their hopeful offers to be released in the final months of the year, the speculation increases. But despite all the information available on the centerpiece awards, other more obscure races remain a complete mystery at this point. Among these, the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar is almost certainly the most complex to prognosticate.Therefore, after lots of research and arduous educated guessing to put it together, the list below offers a more insightful look at this race before the actual individual selections are announced.

For the third year in a row, a U.S. documentary program will tour Cuba. Closing Distances/Cerrando Distancias 3, which takes place April 5-14 2014 will brig Simon Kilmurry, Executive Producer of PBS’s award-­‐winning POV (Point of View) television series, to Cuba.

The first day of the Havana Film Festival I was at the Hotel Nacional, registering for the festival, seeing familiar faces from Cuba and the Caribbean and old friends from the USA: Oleg Vidov and his wife Joan Borsten were there as Oleg who had starred in 3 Soviet films made in Cuba was an honored guest.

The 35th Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (aka Havana Film Festival), December 5 - 15th held its Opening Night at The Karl Marx Theater. Opening night film, Gloria, was preceded by an impressive performance of Cuba’s Contemporary Dance Company which was followed by a tribute to the animator Juan Padron. The announcment of the death of Nelson Mandela and a two minute silent memorial ended the evening on a sober note.

Mankind Entertainment announced that British director Michael Radford is no longer attached to direct the upcoming award-driven historical drama. The split was amicable between producers and director and was based on script differences.
