The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) finishes the first phase of its Cinema Reloaded program with the launch of its first two crowd-funded short films. These films by Ho Yuhang and Alexis Dos Santos are supported by hundreds of individual donations from Cinema Reloaded co-producers. For them, the premiere on Sunday January 30 is a chance to see the work they have backed reach the big screen. It is also a celebration of the active commitment of the IFFR to support digital innovation.

This top 10 list is Hollywood 100%. The major studios constitute a completely different business from the indies. They can carry on business as usual, luxuriating in the ease of releasing without sweating too much over originality or innovation. They are expanding with their big budget films into the realms of transmedia to brand their films across toys, games, webisodes, telecom shorts, clothing, TV series, etc. They own real estate and the means of distribution if not of production. The reason they are mentioned here be me at IndieWIRE is that their presence determines the world market on many levels. On the face of it, there is no relationship, especially moneywise, between the uber wealthy majors and the hungry struggling independents. But the pie is shared even with the runts and this article explores how the majors' shares impact upon the indies of the world.THEATRICAL EXHIBITIONThe international theatrical revenues of major studio films and indies are worth looking at because the majors' presence abroad -- as at home -- inevitably impacts worldwide film distribution for all films. Most obvious is that their mega releases reduce the number of screens available to the indies. Theaters are recognizing that this may not be in their best interest. Megaplexas are increasingly reserving one or two screening rooms for the indies and arthouses, at least in the U.S. are holding convergence discussions. But that is another story taking place on a different front.

Binger Filmlab is an Amsterdam based international feature film and documentary development center where talented writers, directors, producers and script editors from around the world can place both their projects and their usual working practices within an inspiring environment of fellow filmmakers, to be coached and supported by internationally acclaimed mentors and advisors. When it began in 1996, my partner, Peter Belsito and I would coach there, especially concentrating on the art of the pitch. While it has been many years since we've attended, it always retains a special place in our "cosmos" and we are happy to see how far it has progressed in its 14 years of existence.Binger opened its doors in 1996 as a post academic training facility for film professionals and now has matured into a challenging and unique film lab with intensive five-month programs that focus on the development of projects and the individual talents that create them. The world film community discovered this rich resource and they have welcomed to their global crossroads, filmmakers from Western, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, The Middle East, Asia, Latin and North America, and the Australia/ Pacific region.Binger has also discovered its other natural allies in this work of supporting the brightest emerging talents; the Sundance Institute and its Labs in the US, The Nipkow programme residencies in Berlin, and Paris' Cinéfondation (Cannes Film Festival) residence. In September of this year Thomas Mai spoke on the current hot topic, the crisis in distribution. Below is Binger reporter Matthew Curlewis's account.Watch here for YouTube video summation of the Social Media Revolution.

We have all have gone to discussions on distribution where the distributors despair in the face of high costs to advertise, difficulty in getting theatrical releases, no returns on social networking and other new internet initiatives. After attending one in San Sebastian hosted by European Film Promotion, we were notified that one of the supporters, Europa Distribution, might want to tell more people in the business about its mission. My discussion with the founder Adeline Monzier opens up possibilities for U.S. distributors even though they do not receive any government financial aid. Europa Distribution is the voice of independent distributors. Europa Distribution began in 2006 when Adeline left DIRE, the French Association of Independent Distributors which is a lobby and syndicate. ED is a lobby and also a network to introduce distributors to one another and also organize workshops. She is residing for the moment in New York where her husband is at Columbia doing research in physics.

Under new leadership, Joana Vicente has revitalized the Independent Film Market and we are so excited to track the films which show in No Borders (at last we have an event comparable to Rotterdam Cinemart, Pusan PPP and Hong Kong HAF) again. In fact, she has pulled out all stops and this is the culminating event of all the IFP does throughout the year.

LALIFF kicked off its 5 day festival last night with a great audience pleaser, Venezuelan film by first time director (and writer), Marcel Rasquin, HERMANO, audience and jury prize winner from Moscow FF and rumored to be headed toward Telluride. The international sales agent EuropaCorp (whose Luc Besson was president of the Moscow jury when the film won Moscow International Film Festival's top prize, the Golden George), was uncertain that it wanted the film to show in this festival where it had been promised before EuropaCorp was in the picture. But the filmmaker must have prevailed and a packed house at Mann's Grauman Chinese was lucky to see this great film. HERMANO tells the story of an exceptional soccer player and his team's captain and a born leader who have been raised as brothers, and who play football in their slum. The opportunity of their lives arrives when a soccer scout invites them to try out with the city's best team but tragedy intervenes bringing everything back to the soccer field, where they must choose what is more important: family, revenge or their lifelong dreams. The film stars Eliú Armas, Fernando Moreno, Gonzalo Cubero, Marcela Girón, great soccer players as well as actors.
