Mohammad Rasoulof Supporting Green OppositionThe verdict on Jafar Panahi and Mahammad Rasoulof was confirmed this Saturday by the Appeal Court of Iran : 6 years of jail and 20 years ban on any possibilities of filmmaking, writing, etc. and a 1 year jail term for Rasoulof. Iranian media report that the two filmmakers, Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof, have been convicted of "activity against national security and propaganda activities against the regime". Panahi has also been banned from filmmaking, scriptwriting and media activities for 20 years. Panahi is only allowed to travel abroad for Haj [pilgrimage] purposes or emergency medical reasons, and only after posting bail.

Hell and Back Again, the feature documentary by Danfung Dennis that won the World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Award and the World Cinema Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2011 opens on October 5th at Film Forum in NYC and on October 14th at Laemmle Monica in Santa Monica. New Video is the U.S. distributor and this is one of four films inaugurating its new theatrical distribution initiative. Dogwoof is the international sales agent.

You are surely aware of the situation that is affecting Jafar Panahi, and that didn’t allow him to come in Cannes this year to present the movie This is Not a Film (Ceci n'est pas un film) (ISA: Wide Management). At that time, he was out of prison and awaiting his hearing, but banned from filmmaking and from traveling. The latest event does not augur well : His co-director on the film, Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, had his passport confiscated at the airport on his way to France to support the French release of the picture, and he was supposed to go to Toronto after.

In the 8 years of its existence, the Global Peace Film Festival (September 20 - 25, 2011) in Orlando, Florida has gained friends, fans, guests, supporters and volunteers under the directorship of longtime New York Film and Media political activist, Nina Streich. And longtime star acquisition executive Kelly DeVine is the programmer who has done an incredible job programming the festival since 2006. The power of the festival is that it uses the films to motivate action by audience members - something that many of the filmmakers really appreciate when they attend the festival.
