Stalingrad was Russia’s hope for the Academy Award Nomination this year but did not make it to the shortlist. It is still worth mentioning here because it is Russia's first IMAX 3D feature and will be released here in the U.S. by Sony this February. Its grand scale is epic and indeed it is intended to be today’s epic of Russia in the classic sense of the term. An epic is something that all nations need in order to reconcile with wars which inevitably tear the fabric of society apart so drastically that it takes generations to recover.

Montenegro and Russia join EFP as New Member Countries

EFP members decided to welcome the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro and the Russian Cinema Fund, supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, into the pan-European network.

Wide's "CLIP" censored by the Russian Ministry of Culture, will screen in Toronto

Clip, a Serbian arthouse movie that swept a prestigious European festival this year was banned from screening in Russia by the Culture Ministry, prompting allegations of censorship.  Banned over indecent language and scenes of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as “pornographic” depictions of sex between minors, the decision spells a new era for the Culture Ministry, headed since May by Vladimir Medinsky, a conservative-minded PR specialist with a controversial reputation.  The ban was signed by Deputy Culture Minister Ivan Demidov, known for his radical Orthodox Christian views, Sam Klebanov, the prospective Russian distributor of Maywin, said.

Major Hollywood and international film players turned out to welcome Serge Rakhlin, Russian member of HFPA and Director of the Russian Film Commission, and Commissioner Eleonora Granata Jenkinson as they announced today the office opening in the USA of The RUSSIAN FILM COMMISSION created by ROSKINO/SEF, Russia’s only state enterprise responsible for the image of the Russian film industry and represents Russia’s film interests internationally.
