The Power of Few

From the global to the local, The Power of Few breaks barriers of conventional filmmaking, redefines the meaning of interactivity and social networking, while managing to be an intriguing, captivating and entertaining film with a scene-stealing Christopher Walken, a killer score by Mike Simpson (Fight Club), and a magical girl from the ghetto called Few, played by newcomer Tione Johnson. Due also to Kilcher’s long-standing commitment for human rights and social outreach, the producers of The Power of Few collaborated with associations like Volunteers of America and The Covenant House of New Orleans to hire local veterans and homeless people, young and old, to be part of their cast and crew. ”We wanted to give back to the community where we were shooting, not only by bringing film business there but also by mentoring and involving local talent."

The Power of Few:  See it now at EFM, Berlin:

February 9 @ 4:40 PM and February 11 (@ 5:45 PM at CinemaxX 11 located in Potsdamer Platz.

This time-bending thriller encourages audiences to look at things from different perspectives, to see how the choices of a single individual can affect the outcome in a world where everything is interconnected. To underline the theme of inter-connectedness, during pre-production of The Power of Few, first-time director, Leone Marucci, who also wrote and produced the film, and producer

Q'orianka Kilcher

designed and implemented a cutting edge interactive campaign, inviting the global audience to help create the film. Online voters determined key costume, location and character decisions while online casting & editing competitions discovered screen talent worldwide (one role went to a girl from Malta without any prior acting experience!).

The film was shot in New Orleans, where an outreach strategy created opportunities for young locals, homeless people and senior citizens to join the cast and the crew. A casting contest was held online, and won by Stephanie Mejlaq, a girl from Malta who never acted before. Even the editing of Scene 64 was opened to the public, inviting the audience to craft their version of the scene. The winning edit, seen below, by Jeremy C. Hansen is now in the final cut of the movie. Web users could also determine characters’ names and costume choices before the film was shot.

"We really wanted to include the global audience and give everybody who has talent the chance to be involved in a Hollywood movie,” - Marucci and Kilcher.

The producers cultivated an online fan base now eagerly anticipating the film's release. Tens of thousands participated from over thirty countries around the world. Online voting for the acting and editing competitions helped narrow each field to a top 20, from which Marucci decided the winner, stating "It was inspiring to see the different approaches people took with the material. It was a little nerve racking at first, but in the end it was a fascinating experience."

If you missed out on the first wave, worry not. Marucci and Kilcher promise more interactivity is planned around the film's release. There are plans for poster art, press releases and impression contests designed to engage budding designers, writers and actors. For updates, follow along at thepoweroffew.com
