The San Sebastián Film festival, already the prime venue in Europe for showcasing Latin American films is now opening a window in Northern Europe by collaborating with the relatively new, but already strong Zurich Film Festival.

Taking place almost simultaneously, the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) and San Sebastian International Film Festival will join forces from this year 61th edition onwards.

In a first step, Zurich will open a "San Sebastián Window" offering an insight into contemporary Spanish cinema by showcasing entries from the different sections of San Sebastian s programme. In return, the Zurich Film Festival will enhance the San Sebastián programme with a "Zurich Window" featuring contributions from German-speaking countries, most particularly Switzerland.

The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) further strengthens its position through this collaboration with the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Established in 1953, it is the only Spanish event accredited as Competitive Film Festival by the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films (FIAPF). Both parties agree that this shoulder-to-shoulder alliance, which they intend to strengthen over the coming years, will create all kind of synergies and, most importantly, result in filmmakers from around the world enjoying significantly increased access to the important European market.

Both parties appear delighted with the completion of the agreement. José Luis Rebordinos, director of San Sebastian Film Festival, emphasised the joining of forces for the benefit of up-coming filmmaking talent: "We consider ourselves fortunate to have found a kind of bridgehead in the ZFF, a festival that has developed into an important platform for cinema within a very short period of time. It will significantly pave the way north for emerging cinema from the south". ZFF Co-Directors Karl Spoerri and Nadja Schildknecht also pinned their hopes on the collaboration: "We re immensely proud to be able to work closely in the future with such a prestigious partner. San Sebastian is considered amongst other things as an outstanding forum for Latin American films. As such, it enables the ZFF to remain in permanent contact with a region of the world boasting extraordinary creativity and remarkable variety in this field .
