Ventana Sur December 3-6, 2010
The second edition of Ventana Sur is about to open in Buenos Aires and will bring together international sales companies, distributors and buyers from all over the world to offer a complete selection of all the Latin American films produced over the last twelve months. More than 400 films were produced this year. 120 world premières will be presented over the four day event to more than 300 sales representatives and buyers from Latin American and the rest of the world. Devoted to Latin American cinema, organized by the Instituto Nacional De Cine Y Artes Audiovisuales (INCAA) in partnership with the Cannes Marche and sponsored by the European Commission’s Media Mundus program, VS will welcome more than 300 buyers and sellers, including international sales agents Wild Bunch (also a distributor in France, Germany and Benelux), E1, also a distributor in Canada, U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Benelux and U.S., Visit Films who will be screening TIFF film La Soga from Dominican Republic, Films Distribution, Bavaria (also a distributor in Germany), Rezo (also a distributor in France), distributors Arte France, Kino Lorber, Film Movement, and Senator Entertainment, among many others.
VS will present more than 400 Latin American films produced this year, of which 120 are world premieres during the four day event at Cinemark Puerto Madero, a multiplex of 8 screening rooms in the new neighborrhood of Buenos Aires on the banks of the Rio de Plata River. It has been entirely redesigned to house the market, a digital video library and networking areas. Also screening will beTambien la lluvia by Iciar Bollain, Spain's submission for nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards (U.S. Vitagraph, ISA: Wild Bunch). Its story and construction are remarkable. Filmmaker Sebastian (Gael Garcia Bernal) travels to the Bolivia Andes to shoot a film about the Spanish conquest of America which took place of course, in what is now Cuba. He and his crew arrive during the tense time of the Cochabamba water crisis. The lines between past and present, fiction and film, become increasingly blurred as the same story is played out on three different levels as this film within a film draws subtle parallels between the exploitation of the past and the continued exploitation of Latin America by richer countries and multinational corporations.

Also at the video library, for the first time, festival programmers will offer their picks of films with the greatest international box-office potential and international sales companies will be presenting the very latest titles in their catalogues. 400 films produced over the year will be available both there and online to buyers on www.cinando.com.
Teresa Toledo, ♀ director of Casa America in Madrid, is presenting about 10 films currently in post production; one of these films will be awarded a prize sponsored by the Argentine film magazine Haciendo Cine.
Let’s not forget that the Mexican film Ano bisiesto by Michaël Rowe, which was discovered at Ventana Sur 2009 in the Primer Corte section, won the Caméra d’Or prize at the last Festival de Cannes. Released in France by Pyramide Distribution and in U.S. by Strand, it garnered considerable praise from critics.
The Expotoons (November 30-Dececember 2) and Latin Side of the Doc (November 30-December 3) will also welcome professionals from animation and documentaries. And the second European Cinema Week will run alongside Ventana Sur, to be held at Buenos Aires’ Gaumont Cinema on Place Congresco. Directors and cast members will be present as their films are screened.
Conferences, cocktails and professional meetings with all the major players in the Latin American film industry will be happening throughout the duration of the Market.
At the first Ventana Sur last year, several European films found Argentine distributors including Soul Kitchen, Lourdes ♀ and A l’Origine.
Among pick-up acquisitions by European sales companies, Pyramide Films (France) picked up Ano Bisiesto (a Mexican film presented in the Primer Corte section which went on to win the Camera d'Or in Cannes); M-Appeal ♀ (Germany) acquired El Ultimo Verano de la Boyita, which resold very well at EFM in Berlin (Taiwan, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and CIS, etc.). Among sales by European sales agents included Film Boutique (Germany) selling Illusiones Opticas to Wiesner Distribution (Porto Rico); Bavaria (Germany)'s Mal dia para pescar to Cineplex (Colombia. M-Appeal (Germany) also sold European films to Latin American distributors (Tricks to Primer Plano and The World is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner to Ernesto Portela, EPR). Wide Management (France) sold Leo’s Room.
