Wide is proud that its new acquisition, The Mill and the Cross by Lech Majewski, is having its World Premiere at Sundance and its European Premiere at Rotterdam. The Director Lech Majewski changes the way art is portrayed on film, pioneering a new method to “enter” a painting and to create a narrative based on its depicted figures, performed by live actors. In post-production, Majewski painstakingly layered various elements: for example, he added an actor shot in front of a blue screen to several layers of both painted backdrops and location footage, enhanced by digital footage of a majestic sky shot in New Zealand. This process allowed the filmmaker to act as a painter himself.

The Mill and the Cross by Lech Majewski. Pieter Bruegel’s 1564 epic masterpiece, The Procession to Calvary, portrays Jesus staggering to his crucifixion, lost in a panoramic landscape crowded with hundreds of villagers and red-caped horsemen. In depicting Jesus’ plight as one among many vignettes, while soldiers on horseback loom threateningly, Bruegel boldly transposes Christ’s passion and death to sixteenth-century Flanders—a time when the Belgian people were suffering terribly under brutal Spanish occupation.
World Premiere at Sundance

Poland/Sweden - 2010 - 97min

Lech Majewski, one of Europe’s most adventurous and inspired filmmakers, translates Bruegel´s masterpiece The Procession to Calvary into cinema, mischievously inviting the viewer to live inside the aesthetic universe of the painting as we watch it being created.

That man, Franklin Page, has long since moved on - to a wife, two children, and a reliable job in a quiet, rural town. Upon arriving, Sherman seems at first a harmless, if awkward, shell of a man. But as he inserts himself further into the Pages' lives, he reveals himself to be an angry, unstable individual prone to great jealousy and deep resentment. The stability Franklin worked so hard to establish is soon threatened, and the violence he believed he`d left behind in the war begins to re-emerge and cloud over both the household and the town itself.
