Sometimes it seems like there's more talk about movies getting made than there is actual activity. The question of how we all learn and remain aware of the actual practice of day will always loom large. Since knowledge and access (i.e. connections) will always be key commodities in the pursuit of getting it done, conferences that provide the two are always a lure.

I've long felt that one of the most important bridges the Indie Film Community needed to build, was the one into the tech community. I've felt the ideas & know how of the tech sector held the solution to our neglected pillars of cinema: discovery, participation, appreciation, & presentation. I still do, but I realize now that I was narrowcasting my reasons.Truly Free Film and Film Cutlure in general got a great boost last week when Prescreen launched. Audiences and filmmakers both found new ways to connect with great films. What I hadn't anticipated though, was how the process of this new venture's launch offered additional insight for filmmakers. Prescreen's CEO, Shawn Bercuson, offers up his lessons.

I have had the pleasure of participating in two think tanks sessions with Michael Gubbins of the UK. He's a fun and thoughtful advocate for the change that needs to occur in our industry, if we want to survive. As he points out today in his article in MovieScope "Face The Music", ten years after the release of the iPod, has the film biz really learned anything from it's sister, the music industry?

A little while ago I got to participate in a great discussion at Google, centered around Frank Rose's must-read book The Art Of Immersion. Joining Frank and I were Chris Di Cesare, Director of Creative Programming at Google Creative Lab, i Paul Woolmington, Founding Partner of Naked Communications, and Susan Bonds of 42 Entertainment. How do we truly think about film? Do we ignore the truth even when it is right before our eyes? Are we sometimes willing to compromise our ethics in order to achieve our creative goal? Would we be willing to defer that goal in order to maintain the ethical standards that we otherwise embrace?I named David Geertz as one of Hope For Film's Brave Thinkers (2009 Edition) for a new start up he had then. That venture may now be gone, but David is still very much a Brave Thinker, as his guest post below, and his commitment to more, attests.

If Indie Film had a person of the year, it would be Kickstarter this year. It's given more movies the needed boost than anyone else this year (as today's earlier post can attest. Thanks to Dan McGuire for the tip on this!
