I think it is more than three years ago now that I first spoke of Truly Free Film. My hope then, as it is now, that artistic, social, and political motivations would harness the new technologies and it's tools to usher in a transformation from a mass-market driven entertainment economy to a community-based approached to media and art. The examples of this are still few and far between. I remain very optimistic nonetheless, and am heartened by all of what "Far From Afghanistan" represents.

It seems that most Indie Film Makers & Lovers think Indie began in the late 80's or early 90's. There is a lot to be gained from the study and appreciation of those that came first though, and looking at the roots might point us to a better future. I was pleased to see one of those films, David Holtzman's Diary, recently get new attention, and pleased again when Kit Carson's post on it, brought some comments that opened my eyes to other work from the period. Wanda Bershon, guests today, to share some of her knowledge of the initial -- and essential -- Indies.

Today marks the first anniversary of Harvey Pekar's death. Very few people have had as great an influence on my life as Harvey. I was very fortunate to be able to collaborate with him and bring AMERICAN SPLENDOR to the screen.I was thrilled to be approached by Seth Kushner about his current tribute to Harvey. I offer you a glimpse of it here.
