333 Days

If you don't count today, that's how many days we've got left of this decade. Which mostly scares me, but also excites for this reason and pretty much this reason alone: Decade lists! At the end of this year, writers of the pop culture variety are going to try and make sense of the Aughts or the Os or whatever the hell people are calling this decade with tons of summative editorial and many, many lists. The best films. The best television shows. The best albums. Etc. Etc. Etc.

High on valium and low on nutrients, I spent the conscious part of my flight back from Sundance pondering this. This will be quite the definitive decade for my lifetime. I turned 16 on January 1, 2000, and will turn 26 a second after the next decade begins. I've always considered pop culture to play quite a bit into my own sense of self, but that's changed drastically since 2000. So when I started to write down a list of potential top 100 of the '00s candidates, it felt really schizophrenic. Sure, in 2000 Requiem For A Dream, You Can Count On Me and Dancer In The Dark were ultimate cinematic experiences (just as, more embarrassingly, "Oops! I Did It Again" had a regular place in my discman). But I'll admit I haven't seen any of those films since at least 2004. Ten years is a long fucking time to summarize.

So instead I made a list of as many films as I could think of that it would be in my best interest to re-watch or watch for the first time if I stood any chance next December when it came down to trying to really understand what just happened in the past decade. About 70% of them I've seen, enjoyed and would stand good chances of making the list if I tried to make it now. About 20% I've never seen, occasionally lie about having seen and have even rented once or twice but never got around to watching (some big shames: The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gosford Park, L'Enfant, Syndromes and a Century, Murderball and Good Night, and Good Luck). The other 10% are films that didn't really blow me away like they did other people whose cinematic tastes I usually trust quite well, and deserve another chance.

So here, I offer, 333 movies for the 333 days left in this decade. Chances are I won't get through half this list by December 31st.. Especially considering that, hey, there's a whole year of film yet to be released. But I'm gonna try. And I'd love to know of films I forgot, either on purpose, by accident, or by ignorance, and should add to my likely ill-fated ambitions.
