It's 7:45am here in Park City, Utah and the Oscar nominations are up and out. There's nothing like peeling yourself out of bed at 6am to . Sure, there were some pleasantries ("The Tree of Life"! Gary Oldman! "A Separation" for best original screenplay!), but for each one there were like a dozen things to annoy you, from "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" making the cut for best picture to the inexcusable absence of Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender and Albert Brooks in the acting categories. Here's the 10 biggest surprises of the nominations, for better or worse (though mostly worse).

Believe it or not, the Oscar nominations are tomorrow morning. And what a strange lead-up it has been, with countless shifts in buzz and many underdogs-turned-contenders and vice versa.  While yes, there's a significant frontrunner in the best picture race ("The Artist," yawn), and most of the acting trophies seem all but handed out (particularly Christopher Plummer's, yay), the nominations themselves seem poised to offer many a surprise.

"Reality Bites" Hits Sundance

Yesterday evening at the Egyptian Theater in Park City, I saw the best film I've seen at Sundance 2012 so far: "Reality Bites." Screening as a "from the vaults" presentation -- with director Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress in tow for a 40 minute Q&A afterwards -- the screening came exactly 18 years after its debut screening in that very theater.  Sure, there was little real professional reason for me to see it. But after 4 exhausting days and nights seeing movies I've mostly been underwhelmed by, it was a nice little treat.

Over the past few days I read two brilliant and very different pieces discussing art and the importance of preserving its integrity. It's easy to forget just how and why art can be important, especially in the film world, in Oscar season, when so much cinema is self-important, and wrongfully so.

From the moment you see them together, it's clear that "Celeste and Jesse Forever" screenwriters and co-stars Rashida Jones and Will McCormack have been friends for over a decade.

All Sundance, All The Time

After a nostalgic 24 hours of severe pre-Sundance hustle here in Park City (grocery runs, schedule making, e-mailing returning, not being sold alcohol at the Utah State Liquor Store because you don't have American ID), things have calmed down ever-so-briefly to allow for a brief rant here. This will be my fifth Sundance, and so far I'm liking the vibe that comes with that number. After a first festival that essentially can never be topped simply out of how shiny and exciting everything was with fresh eyes, my second, third and fourth festivals brought on a bit of jadedness where I wondered whether everything peaks the first time around. But now, I feel a greater sense of community here than I ever have in the past, and a much more clear focus on how much the festival has to offer beyond the clusterfuckery that happens after 9pm.

This photo of Canadian film, television and theatre actor Allan Hawko from last night's episode of the popular Canadian television show Republic of Doyle (who is also co-creator, executive producer, head writer and showrunner) was posted on the show's Facebook page yesterday morning. By the end of the day, there were thousands of "likes" and comments from fans of the show Hawco. My personal favourite is from someone named Lee-Ann Lea, who wrote:

I am determined to not get sick or fat this Sundance Film Festival (which I head off to tomorrow morning), and this little organization of Ziploc bags full of supplements is part one of my strategy.

I jest you not: how David Foster Wallace changed my life

I have been meaning to write about this all week. In the end it took a pensive mood and an evening alone to get it done, but that seems appropriate.

"It changed my life". Hard for it to not sound like a sales pitch. But as I lay that claim, let it be clear that I feel older and sadder - as much clueless as wise, depressed as inspired - for having read the brilliant, baffling Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. You may doubt your interest in learning at modest length how exactly an individual book wrought such change upon me. That is fine - let me only promise to conclude by explaining why I feel such a blog post is worthy of a reader's time.
