Since there's really nothing more to say, I'll cap off awards season with this lovely clip of Meryl Streep backstage after finally winning her third Oscar last night.  An "Iron Lady" fan I was not, but it's impossible to deny the charm, humility and all-around perfection that is Meryl:

In less than 24 hours, it will all be over. The 84th Academy Awards will be a memory and anyone with a vested interest in the award season will  breathe a sigh of relief. Somehow, the 2011-12 awards season seems poised to exceed its predecessor as the most boring, predictable and unrepresentative in recent memory (as already noted time and time again on this blog).

So it may or may not be an annual tradition for me to online gamble on the Oscars. Some years it's resulted in an extra $50 in my pocket... Some years, $1800 (when Tilda Swinton won for best supporting actress).  So I figured why not  offer a few tips to spread my potential wealth.

The short film award winners are incredibly hard to predict, but—for what it's worth—here are my predictions for the best live action, animated and documentary short films at the 84th Academy Awards, along with their trailers:

The 2011 Best Picture Oscar Lineup in Terms of Race, Class, Gender and (Subjectively Speaking) Quality

Yesterday I took on this year's best picture Oscar race, concluding the obvious in its pathetic representation of race, class, gender and (from my own perspective, at least) quality filmmaking. To follow up -- and show in retrospect just how shitty this year's lineup is -- I've done the same for last year's lineup, which relatively looks downright progressive.

The Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) announced their line-up for this year's festival yesterday and among their selections are some of my favourite short films from this and last year—including a film which I predict will (or at least should) be nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at next year's Academy Awards: Curfew The film, which was written and directed by and stars Shawn Christensen, is about a young man named Richie who, at the lowest point of his life, receives a phone call from his estranged sister who asks him to look after his nine-year old niece for a few hours. Not surprisingly, it recently won the prestigious International Audience Award at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival (arguably the most important short film festival in the world). You can watch the trailer here:

As a result of the hoopla that resulted from the LA Times' investigative report on Oscar voters are how insanely white and old and male they are (which though appalling is hardly surprising), I got to thinking about this year's best picture lineup. Yes, we all know how bad most of the movies are, but there perhaps hasn't been as much talk as there should be about another appalling aspect of Oscar, perhaps this year more than ever:

I Will Always Love You

Tommy: What do you think? Do you think love lasts forever? Hedwig: No, but this song does. Many readers of The Lost Boys will be familiar with that very funny line from one of my favourite films—Hedwig and the Angry Inch (which, as many of you will know, was written, directed and stars the inimitable John Cameron Mitchell). Tommy and Hedwig are referring to I Will Always Love You, of course—the song famously written and recorded twice by Dolly Parton (it was a number one hit for her in both 1974 and 1982) and made even more famous by Whitney Houston. I know most of you have heard it enough for one lifetime, but after watching this 2002 performance of Dolly singing I Will Always Love You on a popular Swedish television show earlier today, I feel compelled to share it. I hope at least a few of you can still enjoy it!
