I sometimes tell people that my favourite romantic comedy is The Silence of the Lambs. I say this partly because I’m a smartass, and partly because the very idea of rom-coms makes be break out in hives—though there really is something electric about that single frame in The Silence of the Lambswhen Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling’s fingers touch for a brief, charged moment. So dear reader, you can imagine my trepidation over the arrival of Valentine’s Day, the most saccharine time of the year. I won’t go on a tirade about the backwash of Hallmark’s slop bucket because I don’t want to ruin February 14 for everyone else. Instead, I present you with you a selection of ten tunes about scorned love and alternative takes on amorous relations.

In recognition of St. Valentine’s Day, here—again—is the trailer for last year’s Academy Award-winning live action short film God of Love, which was written and directed by Luke Matheny and produced by Gigi Dement, Stephen Dypiangco, Ryan Silbert and Stefanie Walmsley.

An Existential Reading of "War Horse"

I went to see War Horse last night. I wasn't sure what to expect - from a scholarly perspective, I had been well-drilled in the Knegtian school, which I felt had prepared me to at least enjoy the film. What I left with was far more unexpected.

Oliver and Derek Go Back and Forth on Bela Tarr's "The Turin Horse"

"The Turin Horse" The Cinema Guild.
Derek:  So with The Turin Horse finding a limited release, it's as good a time as any to discuss our experience with it.

Oliver:  We saw it on the Thursday of TIFF right? We had been there for about a week, seeing 2 or 3 films everyday, so we were pretty exhausted by that point.

Derek:  I found it interesting that of all the different movies that sort of washed over me, I can think of at least five that I really can't remember the contents of. Yet I can recall the details of the Turin Horse quite clearly... although, that probably also speaks to the film's repetitive nature.

Oliver:  Definitely. We had seen our fair share of films that really experimented with cinematic form, like Sokurov's "Faust" for example, but The Turin Horse just kind of blew everything else out of the water, at least for me. I had been speaking with a filmmaker earlier in the festival, and I told him we were seeing it. He said to me that Tarr's films absolutely had to be experienced on the big screen. Which sparked an initial anticipation.

Written and performed by Holly Laurent, this Second City spoof on Lana Del Ray's "Video Games" vis-à-vis the plot of "Hunger Games" is totally fucking brilliant and hilarious (and has a few book/film spoilers, FYI... if you're in the "Hunger Games" know you'll love this, if you're not, you might not really care):

These are indeed the horribly embarrassing nominations for best album at the Juno Awards aka Canada's version of the Grammys. That's right Feist, Justin Bieber's Christmas album is way fucking better than "Metals." And you can suck it, Austra, because Nickelback's latest piece of shit blows you out of the water.  And, hey, francophone musicians, Avril Lavigne's elementary anglo lyrics beats anything you've done last year. Dear god, let Drake win this.

To shed a little more light on my character (no pun intended) I thought I’d make a post pertaining to my near-obsessive fascination with literature. The following is a list of writers that I have had the luxury of experiencing in the novice of my reading career. Their works have impacted me more than any other outside force I can think of; it’s to the point that I’ve decided to devote my life to attempt what these men have succeeded at, becoming an author. I’ve also not ordered any of these, for I feel that would be an insult to give a ranking to artists whose greatness is so varied and independent.
