The first time I started to watch Zebra Katz’ video Ima Read, I shut it off after about thirty seconds. I certainly don’t consider myself a lightweight when it comes to gore flicks, but Ima Read instills an almost tactile sense of unease or fear. The grain of the image, the empty corridors, the twins, the expressionless masks—all of these elements combine to create a creepy atmosphere that nods to the horror film aesthetic. Because the song is so infectious, I had to keep going back for more, and I learned to love the video. It’s gorgeous—in a George A. Romero kind of way.

Viggo Mortensen Actually Attends Genie Awards (and Dons Habs Flag To Boot)

The Genie Awards -- Canada's equivalent of the Oscars -- were handed out in Toronto last night, and the winners were a generally expected crop that saw the deserving "Monsieur Lazhar" win best picture (though I'm still reeling over the massive snubbing of "Take This Waltz" outside Michelle William's acting nod -- how this didn't at least get a screenplay nom is a huge slap in the face to Ms. Sarah Polley).

On Female Directors and the Indiewire Cannes Wish List

I figured since it's International Women's Day, a little rant was in order.... Earlier this week, Indiewire published this list of 30 films we hope get into Cannes. When I was reading through the piece before it went up, I realized something: Shit, there was only one film with a female director on the list... Susanne Bier's "All You Need Is Love."

Electro-goth duo Trust -- featuring Robert Alfons and Austra's Maya Postepski -- released their first album last week, and it's become the perfect soundtrack to the not-quite-warm, on-and-off dreary weather than is Montreal March. While I sincerely hope wherever you are brings more genuinely Spring-like conditions... I suggest either way that you check out the album's best track -- "Sulk" -- below. Then download it and make it the go-to song for melancholic March moseying:

If you’re in Montreal this week, and you have a penchant for film noir, make sure to visit the Mainline Theatre and check out Between Night and Day.  This is the third play from playwright and director Michael Belcher, a 28-year-old transplant from Maine who now calls Montreal home. When he’s not busy completing an MA in the English Literature program at Concordia University, Belcher—who is equal parts wit and charm—puts his pop sensibilities to good use as co-author of the blog Teablogging.

Okay, so she's not actually dancing to "Call Your Girlfriend." She's freaking the fuck out in Andrzej Żuławski's insane 1981 cult classic "Possession." But filmmaker Kyle Patrick Alvarez ("Easier With Practice") decided to put two and two together and a viral video classic has been born:

Time flies when you're not blogging, it seems, for it was only in my last post that I was announcing my intention to make a short film, and now I have shot it.

I was too busy enjoying myself to blog anything from my 4 days in Columbia, Missouri at True/False (save for sadly posts about the gay bar being scary and a vomit fine warning in a taxt -- both basically the opposite of everything else I experienced).

@peterknegt thinks that people who don't have sex are absurd. That's because he is a gay man who can't say no.
