There's been many an occasion on this blog when we've bitched about this or that representational travesty when it comes to female directors. But I noticed something hopeful in that regard today, and figured I'd share.

"The Avengers" Premieres at Tribeca, Weirdly Enough

Remember when the Tribeca Film Festival hosted the World Premiere of "New York Minute," the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen vehicle? The U.S. premiere of "The Avengers" at BMCC Tribeca on Saturday falls into place as Tribeca's 2nd most egregious bow towards movie stars regardless of their merit. And that's sad. I can think of countless other major films in need of visibility who would have no doubt been aided by a gala slot. What does "The Avengers" gain from a Tribeca gala? It's already one of the most anticipated movies of 2012.

Eytan Fox's "Yossi": The Best Film I Saw At Tribeca

I wasn't the biggest fan of Eytan Fox's 2002 film "Yossi & Jaggar."  A love story between two male Israeli soldiers, it was most certainly an affecting, sexy portrait of a doomed gay relationship in a very specific milieu. But I found it a little too soap-operatic, a little too unrealized...

Alright so, yes, Diet Coke is sponsoring the Lost Boys coverage of Tribeca so it's hard to appear objective in this suggestion, but: Starting today there's a Diet Coke sampling truck handing out free bottles somewhere in Manhattan.

From the people that brought you Hot Cocks and Hot Cocks, Part Deux comes.... Hot Cocks 33 1/3 (yes, we continue to pay tribute to the Zucker Brothers despite their minimal contribution to non-fiction filmmaking). For the third year running, I'm helping put on a celebration of queer and sex positive films at Hot Docs.

It was a big night for Canadian films at the Tribeca Film Festival award ceremony last night: Kim Nguyen's "War Witch" and Nisha Pahuja's "The World Before Her" took the top prizes at Tribeca last night in the narrative and documentary categories, respectively.

Being a gay film person in New York has its perks, one of which was being able to follow the production of a movie we all felt would be really important. Ira Sachs' "Keep The Lights On" was the movie, it was the summer of 2011, and we were all excited to have a gay-themed story told in a big way by one of New York's greatest gay filmmakers. It seemed that, at some point, everyone I know took part in the film somehow. When I watch the film now, I lose track of the number of friends' faces that pop up in the background. (Yes, I'm also in it at one point, but you can hardly see me.)
