After several decades of the Reagan-Bush-Palin-Santorum circus in town, perhaps we don't need to be reminded of how silly this country can be.  But a group of documentaries at the Tribeca Film Festival are exploring this funny land in a number of ways:

Patty Chase, where have you been!? Looking gorgeous and handing out LCD to boot, the sight of Bess Armstrong on last night's episode of "Mad Men" brought a serious smile to my face. She only had maybe 5 minutes of screentime, but I'd consider giving her drug doling socialite at least one more appearance...

If y’all read my preceding posts about the Nashville Film Festival (NaFF), you already know that it’s one of my favourite film festivals—and that Nashville is one of my favourite cities to visit. Not surprisingly, I’m disheartened that today—Day 5 of the festival—is my last full day here (although I’m sure my liver feels differently, especially after a night of honky tonkin’ on Lower Broadway).

I've never wanted to be a professional critic because I always feel there are so many opinions that are unexplainable.

There was no shortage of films to see on the first day of the Nashville Film Festival (NaFF), which kicked off yesterday at the Regal Green Hills Stadium in Nashville, but my opening night film choice was easy: Beauty is Embarrassing, Neil Berkeley’s refreshing and amusing documentary about the American artist, cartoonist and illustrator Wayne White, which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March.

Seung-Jun Yi's doc "Planet of Snail" was the big winner at IDFA last fall, and it is having its North American premiere this weekend at Tribeca. And while I have yet to see too many other docs at the fest just yet, I'd wager a bet that it will end up being one of the festival's very best.

I used to love studio-produced romantic comedies. Or at least love them in a guilty pleasure sort of way. "Pretty Woman," "Sleepless in Seattle," "As Good As It Gets," "My Best Friend's Wedding," "Bridget Jones' Diary"... Many of them flawed, to be sure (and occasionally downright dangerous in that whole unrealistic fairy tale projection thing). But they were and are joyous viewing experiences if you don't think too much about them. However, somewhere in the past decade, I more or less gave up on the genre.  This new age of "New Years Eve," "Valentines Day," anything-starring-Katherine Heigl type of films almost always come across as hastily put together, purse pandering pieces of garbage that suggest there's no intelligence level in its audience demographic.
