"Magic Mike" finally opens Friday, and I haven't been this curious about studio box office in some time. There's really been nothing like it before in the mainstream marketplace, and reviews and interest have been way stronger than any of us would have expected a few months ago.

Some unprecendented hometown pride came my way today thanks to this story on the CBC about a Connor Ferguson, an 18-year-old transgender woman who was voted Prom Queen at her high school.

I'm all for anti-smoking advertisements taking over cigarette packs, and while the new batch of them covering all Canadian brands is generally affective, there's one I'm sincerely questioning. Look, I know smoking does crazy, horrible things to your body, but does it really ever turn you into a zombie? Turns your pupils into giant silver circles and dies your ENTIRE HAND brown? Especially when, as this ad suggests, you're like 30 years old. Smoking is a horrible habit that no one should start and everyone else should quit. But exaggerating its hazards to comic effect ain't gonna do much good.

Many large metropoles attract hundreds of film festivals. Cities like New York City and Toronto are inundated with film festivals. Surely some of these festivals are less than exciting; many exist simply to provide a venue for those films that can't find another venue.

Today is the 82nd birthday of one of the greatest motion picture actresses, if not THE greatest. Her Eminence Gena Rowlands was never a movie star. Her widest-known success as an actress will probably be "The Notebook." I'd never dis that movie, because I really do love it, but let's take a little look back at some of Gena Rowlands' greater screen moments.

This will be my only Provincetown Film Festival related post on The Lost Boys simply because PROVINCETOWN IS THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD and the last thing you want to be doing while there is blogging. But my sole contribution is a fun time: A video of BFFs Craig Chester and Parker Posey being lovely and amazing on stage at Provincetown Town Hall as Chester feted Posey with the festival's acting award.
