For a film so obsessed with cool, “Grease” is surprisingly naff. Perhaps it was inevitable. A film set in the 1950s and filmed in the 1970s was always set precariously amid the ebbs and flows of fashion.

You may or may not be aware that the Canadian province of Quebec is about a week away from a heated election that could see the decade-long reign of the federalist (and frankly, corrupt) Liberal Party fall to the separatist (and frankly, xenophobic) Parti Quebecois. While the main options aren't exactly inspiring as far as this voter is concerned (though there thankfully are 4 other parties running), the importance of voting is as clear as ever, and Quebecois filmmaker Xavier Dolan wants you to know why.

Yesterday saw release of the new music video by perhaps the biggest thing to happen to the internet youth scene/indie music industry coalition this year. Grimes’ video for the single “Genesis”, from her January album Visions, features the singer in desert, beach, and city landscapes, swinging around swords and flails, stroking a snake in the back of a limousine (the same snake that accompanied Brit Spears onstage in her 2001 VMAs performance of I’m A Slave 4 U), and dancing with her pink-haired companion in a metallic suit. The usual. While the video totally strays from my would-be visual interpretation of the dreamy track, and frankly feels in some sense like a collaboration between Harmony Korine and Lady Gaga, it showcases Grimes’ style and bizarre grace just as well as the video for her first single “Oblivion” did. And although she’s claimed before to hate being called “cute”, this video makes it so hard to resist. The girl is adorable.

As widely reported earlier this month, the new Sight and Sound poll of the 50 Greatest Films of All Time featured only one film by a female director. It was hardly a surprise to those versed in the inequalities of the film industry. No women competed for the Palme d’or at Cannes this year.

I was anticipating last night's Comedy Central roast of the great Roseanne Barr for weeks and was generally not disappointed. While a few of the roasters had some mostly weak rants (sorry, Seth Green), I was totally blown away by the roasts by Amy Schumer and Gilbert Gottfried, both of which are posted below via (shitty quality) videos, at least as long as Comedy Central keeps them up:

With the announcement of Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" opening this year's New York Film Festival (as a world premiere, no less... that that, TIFF and Venice), I figured I might as well offer up this list of each and every opening night film in the festival's now 50 year history for any nerds out there. Notably, the selection of 'Pi' allows Lee to join Robert Altman, Pedro Almodóvar and François Truffaut as the only directors to have had more than one film chosen to open NYFF ('The Ice Storm' did so in 1997).

I'll believe it when I see it, but The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting none other than KATE BUSH is going to perform at Sunday's closing ceremony, alongside the likes of George Michael, The Who, The Spice Girls, Muse and One Direction!

Earlier today, an image started circling the Internet. On it was a list of the songs its poster professed to be on the VH1 Divas Live Tribute to Whitney Houston. A number of things don't exactly make sense on the preliminary setlist. Why is Kelly Clarkson singing two of her own songs, when no one else gets more than one? Will anyone care about Carly Rae Jepsen in December? Won't P!nk and Nicki Minaj have new singles to peddle by then? The producers of "Sparkle" wouldn't use this as an opportunity to bring out Houston's able-voiced co-star Jordin Sparks? Why is "The Bodyguard" soundtrack so heavily represented?
