This Weekend, Go See "Weekend"

Tender, talky and intensely sexy, Andrew Haigh’s "Weekend" could reductively be described as a sort of gay Before Sunrise. Over the course of its titular timeframe, the film follows Russell (Tom Cullen) and Glen (Chris New), two men who extend their blurry and drunken one night stand into 48 hours to remember. Russell is a pragmatic and semi-closeted lifeguard; Glen is a stubborn intellectual who “doesn’t do boyfriends.” Their star-crossed romance is quite perfectly executed by director Haigh, who lets the film quietly creep up on the viewer as a powerful new entry into the queer cinema lexicon.

An Excerpt From "About Canada: Queer Rights"

So over the past two years or so, I've been working on an introductory academic text book - a sort of "Queer Canada For Dummies" - that documents the history of Canada's queer rights movement and the issues facing queer people in Canada today. It's been an unexpected, challenging and remarkably fulfilling experience, and honestly one I never thought would result in an actual book. But this evening, c'est official: I'm launching the book at the University of Toronto in an event that will surely defined awkward public speaking. If you're in Toronto, feel free to come by and witness (and I'll be doing the same in Montreal next Monday):

TIFF is over and frankly I'm too exhausted to offer any sort of post-mortem on this blog. Having a massive festival in your hometown honestly sucks every iota of life out of you by the time it's over and all I can do now is try and relax for 2 or 3 days before the remainder of the fall festival blitz starts kicking into high gear. That said, you can check out loads of stuff over at indieWIRE here and here and here.

Check out my full interview with Steve McQueen - the director of near masterpiece "Shame," the best film I saw at TIFF - over at indieWIRE, but a snippet of audio is below:

I officially hit my TIFF wall this morning (though dressing in drag and staying out until 5am for the STIFF party clearly had something to do with), and decided to spend an extra hour in bed catching up on the last episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm"'s wildly uneven latest season. And holy shit, is Greg - the flamboyant little boy in the finale - amazing. The episode's handling of the child's likely homosexuality is questionable (his mother's behaviour is very homophobic, particularly in scenes not posted below... though oddly enough Larry handles Greg pretty awesomely), but if you just step outside the politics and enjoy the kids performance: Wow. For your consideration, the best guest actor of the 2011-12 Emmy contention period:

The classiest person at the Toronto Film Festival talks about what will clearly be one of my favourite films of 2011, "We Need To Talk About Kevin":

12 Minutes and 20 Seconds With Madonna

Yesterday, in what had to have been one of the most surreal professional experience I've ever had, I got to interview Madonna. To be honest, I barely even remember the 12 minutes and 20 seconds I was sitting beside her in a hotel room. From the second she introduced herself, it was all a nervous blur. I just kept wanting to say, DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!? But somehow I managed to make it through the interview without resorting to sadly truthful proclamations ("Like a Prayer" was my coming out song! I wore down three "Immaculate Collection" CDs and had to keep getting new ones!) and now I can cross that off the shallow end of my bucket list. Full interview up on indieWIRE shortly, but the full audio is now online below.
