All Hail Iceland and Belgium

And while we're on the subject of gay rights... I spent the past week in Iceland, where the Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir, is the world's first openly lesbian head of government. Since then, I've learned that Belgium is run by openly gay Prime Minister Elio de Rupo, making it the first country in the world to have an openly gay person as long term national leader (Johanna Sigurdardottir serves under a president). As Elio di Rupo said when he first came out, "I'm gay. So what?". But at the same time, it's a significant first which I can't see being replicated in the UK or US any time soon - and having previously not been aware of either, it felt like trivia worth sharing. Read more on their Wikipedia pages here and here.

You'd be forgiven for not knowing that Sally Field had a gay son - she's never spoken about it before, presumably because it's none of anyone's business.

Watch Bjork's Surprise Appearance at the Reykjavik Film Festival Awards Ceremony

This'll be the final Iceland-related video today, I promise, but here's a quick (and admittedly, uneventful) clip of Bjork's surprise (at least to me) appearance presenting an award at the Reykjavik International Film Festival. When they announced her name, I genuinely thought it was a joke. But then a gasp (from the 25% of the audience that weren't Icelandic, everyone else didn't seem to flinch) and the immediate rise of 100 iPhone cameras confirmed that Bjork was indeed in the house:

Dario Argento wasn't the only big winner at the Reykjavik International Film Festival. Matt Knott, contributor to both Indiewire and this blog, and a great partner in crime since we met at the most glorious film festival of all time (I'd also say he's an excellent filmmaker -- which is he -- but it might sound biased), won the festival's Golden Egg for best short film:

Watch The Mayor of Reykjavik Fete Dario Argento

This past weekend in Reykjavik, the mayor of Iceland's capital city Jón Gnarr (on the left in the above photo) handed legendary genre filmmaker Dario Argento the Reykjavik International Film Festival's honorary Golden Puffin award at a ceremony at City Hall. While that may seem like a little unexciting, keep in mind that Gnarr is no ordinary mayor. As depicted in the fantastic 2010 documentary "Gnarr," Mr. Mayor is one of Iceland's best known comedians, and more or less ran for office as a joke.

Too bad it's pretty much only on this one. At the entrance to a Big Lebowski-themed bar in downtown Reykjavik ((called simply Lebowski Bar if you're in town):

so at midnight tonight I (oliver) will be boarding a bus on a trip to return to my hometown for the first time in over a month. I spent all of my september beginning life as a university student in the unreal city of montreal, and this canadian thanksgiving weekend will be my inaugural stopping by as an "independent adult". although my stay in london ontario will only stretch the expanse of four days, I still don't know how to feel about the idea of revisiting the roots I so fortunately was able to stray from, but still so deeply miss (in a wow-I-really-want-to-be-a-kid-again sort of way)? so for any of those in the same boat as me, here are a few nice songs to provide a soundtrack to your homecoming…

Ridiculous Tweets From ABC's Lame Coverage of Last Night's Presidential Debate

Being in Iceland, I was forced to watch the Presidential debate via ABC's live-stream on YouTube (at 2 in the morning). Less than optimal, but I appreciated it was even an option. Though I did not appreciate ABC's horrifyingly lame tactic of running unnecessary and occasionally embarrassing tweets from whoever used the hashtag #debate at the bottom of the screen:
