I launched this blog a little over 5 years ago and have had so, so much fun with it. But I can't be a lost boy forever (though don't take this as a suggestion I'm anything close to a "found man" today... more like semi-lost man-boy), and honestly I've been phoning it in a bit the past little while anyway, largely out of the simple fact that I don't have the time and energy I did back when it started. So after 2,392 posts, I'm letting it go. When things you once loved doing start feeling like just another notch on a to-do list, it's time to re-assess. Though I will definitely miss the occasional inspired opportunity to make a silly list or inappropriate rant.

For what it's worth, here lies my 10 favourite songs of 2012 (which follows #50-41, #40-31, #30-21 and #20-11).
It continues trends throughout the entire list (Canadians, Swedes, guilty pleasure pop, fun indie rock, breakup songs, empowerment anthems, etc) and is capped off with the two artists that as far as I'm concerned gave the most important contributions to music in 2012: Frank Ocean and Fiona Apple. Each were represented once previously on the list (with Ocean's incredibly catchy cautionary tale on materialism, 'Lost' and with Apple's scathing and intense post-breakup ballad 'Regret') but they come up again at #2 and #1 with two of the most lyrically gorgeous songs I've heard in some time (just above what I almost made #1 -- the year's ultimate breakup/empowerment song and perhaps its most catchy from my new favourite Swedes).

I figured since it is December already I might as well kick off my long cherished tradition of year-end list making with a five-part series of posts on my picks for the 50 best songs of 2012. I've been slowly and geekily putting this list together over the past month or so (mostly while half-sedated on planes or trains), expanding the list from an original 25 to a perhaps over-ambitious 50 when it became clear that this has been a pretty amazing year for music, at least as far as my subjective tastes go. To that end, please note that I am also no music aficionado (this list will probably make that clear). But it's such a fun exercise - and time-capsule - to put together this kind of list, and will hopefully add a few worthy tracks to the 3 or 4 of you who read this's iPods. I'll also offer commentary when the list is complete at the end of the week...
Song of the Week: HAIM's 'Don't Save Me'

What's really fun about this week's pick is that it reminds me the 1990s era boy and girl bands. Spice Girls, Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys.... HAIM is sort of an 2010s indie version of them. They consist of three sisters from Los Angeles who grew up in a musical family. They've perform a lot with their siblings until they decided it was time for them to build their own little show. We can easily feel the classic, folk and R&B influences of their childhood in their pop. "Don't Save Me: is the first single of their upcoming album. Their last EP "Forever" showed everyone how these Californian sisters can easily blend almost any kind of musical styles that would normally be so far apart into a perfectly catchy three minute track. I can't wait to hear more from them. They are definitely a great 2012 discovery.
