“Summer Heights High”

I realize I’m a bit late to this train.. but I recently got into Australian mockumentary TV series “Summer Heights High,” which I believe aired on HBO last fall. From what I can gage, quite a few people missed it, so I figured I’d send out a recommendation.

The show stars Chris Lilley, a sort of one man Christopher Guest (and, frankly, just as talented), as three characters: effeminate and megalomaniac “Director of Performing Arts” Mr G; self-absorbed, privileged teenager Ja’mie; and disobedient, vulgar Tongan student Jonah.  It’s hilarious satire, though at times - frighteningly accurate. At times it’s this close to be being passable as an actual documentary. And thus, by season’s end, it offers some unexpected insight into egomania and the absurdity of the human condition.

Its only eight half hour episodes - I got through it a couple days. Though you can move over to Lilley’s previous series - We Can Be Heroes: Finding The Australian of the Year - when you’re done, as I am right now. Here’s some intros to each character:

Jonah:
