It’s being reported that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” may have made as much as $25 million last night from MIDNIGHT SHOWINGS. That beats “Harry Potter 5”‘s record, and is a good $7 million more than “The Dark Knight” took in.
It’s all of a sudden shockingly possible (though still not probable) that “New Moon” could overtake “The Dark Knight”‘s record $67 million opening day gross. I’m sure a massive Friday->Saturday drop will keep it far away from “Knight”‘s weekend record of $158 million, but for a astronomically hyped film like “New Moon” to exceed expectations like this is quite something. I might have intense negative interest in the film, but I am pleased to see this kind of girl power shock the industry.

Friday numbers suggest “Precious” is almost certain to be joining this list, and the fact that it’s doing so on 18 screens as opposed to the 1-8 screens of the films listed below is truly amazing:

(thank you, Box Office Mojo.)

Finally, after five years of showing fairly minimal erosion, the “Saw” series took a 50% sequel to sequel nosedive this weekend, which might mean soon we won’t face Jigsaw and company every single late October.

Not that I should be surprised, but it looks like Paramount has officially turned micro budget horror flick “Paranormal Activity” into a massive success story and perhaps the marketing success story of the year. Look at last night’s numbers:

That should equate to a $6-7 million dollar weekend and a $35,000-$45,000 per-theater average, one of the better averages ever grossed on a film within its screen range. It also means the film will recoup its budget twice over on each individual screen its playing on. That’s pretty incredible.
