Bea Arthur passed away today of cancer.
It's strange when a celebrity dies and it truly saddens you to a degree that it's as if you knew them. But that's definitely how I felt when I saw the onslaught of facebook status updates that informed me of Arthur's passing. The past month or two, I - for no apparent reason - started going to bed with The Golden Girls - in the form of an episode or two on YouTube. The Golden Girls is one of the foremost shows that reminds me of my childhood - I'd watch it every Saturday night before bed. So as my adult life has lately become a bit geographically erratic, I've found msyelf watching an old series consistently before bed to give me some sense of home (I usually rotate between Golden Girls, Roseanne and Cheers). To read that Bea Arthur had passed on a slightly hungover afternoon that followed coming home drunk to watch 3 consecutive episodes of her... Frankly, its a little crushing.
So I'll share with you the last episode I watched with the pleasure of thinking that somewhere out there, Bea Arthur was still making snappy one-liners. Oddly enough, it was truly my favorite episode of the series:
