Had I been in North America the past week or two, I might have been a little more active re: the developments of "Bruno." I'm mildly disappointed I didn't really get to participate. I haven't even seen the film yet (though finally found a Berlin cinema that's screening an un-dubbed version, so that should change soon). Anyway, given my international circumstances, I thought I'd at least offer this press release that came in re: the film's box office around the world. It's basically a desperate attempt from Universal to make it seem like the film isn't a huge disappointment (which, after that Saturday drop, it most definitely is: It'll be lucky to gross $65 million), but it has some interesting numbers. It wasn't even #1 in Bruno's "home country" of Austria. But in AustrALia, it was huge, averaging $27,000 per theater (it only averaged $8,500 or so in Austria).
Here's the release (ignore those annoying %'s as they don't account for "Borat"'s much more minimal screen count):
INTERNATIONAL TERRITORY GROSSES DATA FOR BRUNO -- IN MARKETS WHERE THE FILM WAS RELEASED BY UNIVERSAL PICTURES
BRUNO topped the charts in the U.K. and Ireland with a No. 1 opening and an excellent weekend gross of $8.1M (£5M) at 457 locations. BRUNO broke the record for the biggest opening Friday for an 18-rated film, and the biggest opening weekend for an 18-rated comedy in the U.K.
· BRUNO is the No. 1 film in Australia and it grossed an outstanding $6.1M (A$7.7M) at 222 dates. It has 28% market share and it is 58% bigger than BORAT's opening. It is Universal's 2nd biggest opening of all time, just behind Fast & Furious (A$7.9M).
· BRUNO opened in Germany with an excellent $2.9M at 453 dates, which is 12% bigger than BORAT.
· BRUNO opened in Austria with a terrific $650k at 76 dates, which is 120% bigger than BORAT.
· Belgium opened BRUNO with $780k at 49 dates, which is 20% ahead of BORAT. It is No. 2 behind ICE AGE 3, but No. 1 in some locations.
· BRUNO is great in the Netherlands with $900k at 88 dates, which is 25% bigger than BORAT.
· BRUNO opened in New Zealand with an outstanding $600k at 49 dates, which is 20% bigger than BORAT.
· BRUNO bowed in South Africa and grossed an excellent $106k at 45 dates.

Sacha makes a fool of gays and heterosexual people and himself, on the same occasion in this 'movie'. Even if it's topped the US bo for the whole weekend, it's lost to 'ice age' for the past two days. I'll spend my money on the conservative movie HP6, before enjoying J'ai tué ma mère (one day to go).

You were really asking for reviews, but Fred gave you one anyhow, so I thought I'd also chime in. Saw Bruno opening day and loved it. It's an incredibly truthful, hilarious, insightful, well crafted satire. As a gay guy, I found Bruno to be both sympathetic and brave. He is a role model for the 2000s--happy to be himself, fearless, honest. If the world was more like Bruno there would be no war (just questionable fashion choices). The only fools in the movie are the homophobes who have so little humanity and so much hate (not to mention no sense of humour). Give me more Burno, all the time, in full velcro jumpsuit. Thank you.
