As noted in the last few entries, I spent this past weekend in Montreal... 'Twas a reunion of sorts for a bunch of us who went to school together, and we decided to do it up in style. When all of us were writing our theses, we'd have "themed" nights, where we'd all dress up and hit the town with a common sartorial approach. Examples included "sexy animals," "cougars & bears," "nearly naked." It might sound like it borders on lame, but I can attest that it's a lot of fun, both in the sense that you get to live a night totally outside yourself (especially useful during the stresses of thesis writing), and sometimes the looks you get from people when 10 of you pile into a bar dressed up as sexy bees and flamingos and frogs is intensely priceless.

These looks were also present this past Saturday, when we decided to have a theme night redux, and took on a Mad Men inspiration (or as best some of us could given we were coming in from out of town and short on early 1960s business attire). A bunch of us went from an apartment to a cheesy hotel lobby to a hole-in-the-wall bar to the inevitable poutine at a diner.. dressed like Dons and Bettys. The best was when someone at said dive bar came up and called us on our specific theme instead of just thinking we were a bunch of weirdos (earlier on, in the bathroom of that bar, the guy peeing at the urinal next me said: "Are you trying to be, like, an engineer from the '60s?"... while a cougar in the hotel lobby told me "I didn't know the kids were dressing so dapper these days")

And though it wasn't Mad Men-related, my favorite moment of the night came when a gang of girls from some hick town in Ontario were in Montreal for a Bachelorette Party, and walking by the bar I was outside smoking in front of. They stopped myself and a friend, asking if we could be in some photos with them. As we posed for various themed shots ("everyone do the Tokyo!"), I asked why they had stopped us. It turns out they were on a scavenger hunt, and one thing on their list was "Get a group photo with some gay guys." I seriously don't think I've ever laughed so hard. Somewhere in Facebookland there's a bunch of photos of me hammered, dressed up in 1960s wear, and doing the Tokyo with a bunch of girls wearing Crocs and bad extensions.

Anyway, here's a bunch of photos from the night, mostly thanks to Dallas and Jess.
