Indiewire's Summer Movie Preview: Female Directors Are Almost Proportionately Represented!
There's been many an occasion on this blog when we've bitched about this or that representational travesty when it comes to female directors. But I noticed something hopeful in that regard today, and figured I'd share.
I remember back in March an article I helped write on Indiewire about the potential films in Cannes got a few nasty e-mails for not featuring only one film directed by women. My defense was simply there weren't any really in contention. And as it turns out, not one film directed by a women made Cannes' official competition. Which is very, very sad.
But today another list went up on Indiewire noting the 20 indie films folks have to see this summer. When I wrote the preview, I genuinely was not taking the gender of the directors into any sort of consideration when choosing the films. But in the end, eight of our 20 films listed on the preview were directed solely by women, and another has a female co-director. That's almost 50%! When most studies suggest women direct something like 5% of movies overall, it's nice to see a summer jam packed full of not only films directed by women, but GREAT films directed by women. So here's to Julie Delpy, Lynn Shelton, Sarah Polley, Lauren Greenfield, Lorene Scafaria, Alison Klayman, Valerie Faris, Tanya Wexler and Julia Loktev! And here's to this not even being notable sometime soon.
