I've always been pretty awful at these online profile self-analysis sort of things, but I'm super excited to be a part of this and so here's my attempt to introduce myself as best I can.
Hi, my name is Oliver. When I was born, for the first day or so of my life, my head was oddly cone-shaped and my parents wondered if I had come from an alien planet. This theory has yet to be disproved. I currently live in one of the less-cool cities in the world named London: the one in Ontario, Canada. Right now I consider myself both imprisoned and sheltered by the public education system, in a sentence that is gradually reaching its end where I'll soon be forced to face this much-talked-about "real world", for better or for worse. I'm honestly not entirely sure yet what I want to do with my life... I guess my main goal is to get out of it alive, but I'm 17 and can already sense a quarter-life crisis around the bend that will probably send me on a telling-enough soul search. So there's that.
I've attended the Toronto International Film Festival twice (the most recent time as an intern for Indiewire in one of the most amazing experiences of my life). I also had a moving film fest experience in the unlikely location of shorefront town Picton this summer, as a participant of Peter Knegt and Jennifer MacFarlane's passion project Picton Picturefest. I admire film festivals in their ability to recreate a sort of heaven on earth... and sometimes, a hell (in a kind of hangoverish sensory overload sort of way).
It'd be difficult to pinpoint the moment in my life where I fell head-over-heels in love with the movies. Most signs do point though to the 1997 release of James Cameron's Titanic... a film which for me contains enough nostalgia within it to sink a ship. If I were to envision myself as a cinematic figure I'd say I'm a cross between Antoine Doinel, Harmony Korine when he's on David Letterman, and Ash from Fantastic Mr. Fox, though my teenage life could be very eerily paralleled in a Submarine (2010) and J'ai tué ma mère (2009) combo. But all comparisons aside, I really just adore movies and hopefully I will be able to release some of that love, among other things, via this blog.
So check back soon!
