The ridiculous crazies at the Westboro Baptist Church are heading Sundance way! With one of their nice little quotes seen in the title of this entry sure to be eagerly chanted, the Kansas "church" is planning two demonstrations during the festival: One at 2:45pm on Sunday, and another at 6pm the same day. Both will be at the Eccles Center, and both will be regarding Kevin Smith's right-wing satire horror flick "Red State."

In a posting on an Internet site tied to Westboro Baptist Church, the organization says "these Hollywood heathens celebrate movies that blaspheme the Lord . . . "

"The actors, producers, directors and fans of the Doomed american motion picture industry enjoy nothing more that engaging in drunken, wanton, riotous behavior and mocking the servants of God from (Westboro Baptist Church)," the Internet site says. "Of one accord, they raise their clenched fists to God and say 'NO, We will not obey!'"

Engaging in drunken, wanton, riotous behavior and mocking the servants of God from Westboro Baptist Church? Sounds good to me. In fact, I plan on using it as my 2011 Sundance Film Festival mantra. I'm also looking forward to raising my clenched fist to God and say 'NO, I will not obey!" when the most exciting part of all of this goes down: Counter-protest! The Westboro Church has always fascinated me in how remarkably evil and batshit crazy they are and I'm weirdly curious to see these monsters in the flesh, especially with Kevin Smith leading the way:

@thatkevinsmith - January 19, 2011- Here are the facts: (1) The Westboro Baptist Church are haters of Biblical proportions! “Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, & not suffer sin upon him.” (Lev 19:17) (2) The WBC’s punishment in Hell for their hatred will be administered by the very Jesus they blaspheme daily. “…he shall be tormented with fire & brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, & in the presence of the Lamb: & the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever & ever: & they have no rest day nor night.” (Rev 14:10-11)

The Harvey Boys are seeking the aid of the Mighty Thor, hoping he’ll lay down his hammer and instead pick up a protest sign on our behalf, in a Park City battle of the mega-gods! If he’s in reshoots, we’ll be reaching out to Sigourney Weaver to channel Zuul on our behalf. If she’s not at Sundance this year, we’ll start praying to Krom. And if you don’t help us, Krom? Then to hell witchoo.

For thirty minutes of fun-filled photo-opportunities, the Harvey Boys will peacefully counter-protest the WBC Eccles Theater Protest. All are welcome. Wear YOUR dopey sentiments nobody gives a shit about on a sign of your own making, as you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the folks who’ve mastered the art of writing utter horseshit on cardboard! BYOS (Bring Your Own Sign)

The scoffing and the mocking will begin sharply at 6pm. Remember: this is a PEACEFUL protest. The only venom you bring is printed on a placard, your only weapon: wit.

"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness..." (Isa 5:20)

GOD DOESN’T HATE FAGS OR
ANYBODY ELSE FOR THAT MATTER.
GOD SAVES! THEN, GOD PASSES IT
TO GRETZKY - WHO ROOFS THAT
SHIT, TOP-SHELF! THEN GOD AND
GRETZKY HIGH

They never learn -- and God bless 'em for it.

There's a long history of religious conservatives -- including the ilk of batshit-crazy extremists personified, in extremis, by the Phelps Phanatics -- who bring the kind of awareness and publicity to a creative work that money and publicists can't buy. (Bring it on, you loonies...)

I read a very early draft of RED STATE, and viewed what was considered the unfinished but picture-locked version in November. I've always considered RED STATE to be a morality tale and have been amused (bemused?) whenever it's referred to as a "horror" film. Certainly it contains elements that are horrific, but if the word horror must be used, then I'd call it "a horror film with a conscience" (and, of course, with Kevin's devilish sense of humor).

Kevin Smith, after all, considers A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS one of the most important/influential films of his life -- and he made DOGMA, for Christ's sake!

Anyway, thanks Fred Phelps, for your incestuous, pathetic posse of haters. Now more people than ever will see RED STATE.

(Written from home -- my head wrapped in a turban, with painkillers and bed rest the order of the day due to a head injury sustained while on my way to the airport and Park City. I'm sure going to miss the chills & thrills at the Eccles come Sunday, but thank God for indieWIRE -- for being the next best thing to being at "the 'dance.")
