At the Spirit Awards nominees reception last night, a man saw I was holding a camera and came up to me and was like "Who are you shooting for?" I told him indieWIRE, from which there didn't seem to be an recognition on his face. It didn't matter either way, because he was like "Do you want to take a photo of Frederic Prinz von Anhalt?" Seeing no recognition on my face, he was like "Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband." Though certainly not iPOPable, I figured what the hell. The man took me through the crowd, and there was Frederic:
I drunkenly researched him a bit when I got "home" that night: A German-born socialite, at the age of 37 he became the adopted son of Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt in a business transaction put together by a former consul of Bolivia who pioneered the selling of noble titles, honorary doctorates, and other decorations in Germany. He is now best known as Zsa Zsa Gabor's ninth husband, and her longest-lasting marriage.
And then, my actual knowlege base of Frederic clicked: He was one of the potential Anna Nicole Smith baby daddies. A wikipedia fill in:
On February 9, 2007, Prinz von Anhalt claimed that he had a decade-long affair with Anna Nicole Smith and that he was the biological father of her infant daughter, Dannielynn. He claimed they met in the 1990s, during Smith's brief marriage to elderly oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II. He claimed Smith approached him and Gabor at the Plaza Hotel in New York. "She was a very big fan of Zsa Zsa and wanted to be like Zsa Zsa," he said. "She wanted to be a princess". He also claimed the two started an affair soon after, meeting over the years in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City.
Short of divorcing Gabor, Prinz von Anhalt said the only solution would have been adopting Smith, adding that he did consider that and even filled out adoption papers, but Gabor refused to sign them. However when pressed on the issue by television host Bill O'Reilly, he could not give any proof that he had even met Anna Nicole Smith. Prinz von Anhalt then agreed to reappear on O'Reilly's program and submit to a lie detector test. On 12 February 2007, Gabor's former publicist told the television program Inside Edition that the actress's husband is a "chronic fabricator". On 15 March 2007, he announced that he is suing both O'Reilly and Fox News for defamation of character.
Prinz von Anhalt has been quoted as saying that he could potentially be the father of Smith's infant girl, Dannielynn, who was born in September 2006, and said he would file a lawsuit if Dannielynn is turned over to Howard K. Stern or Larry Birkhead by the courts. Mark "Hollywood" Hatten and Alexander Denk also came forward with paternity claims.
On 12 February 2007, according to the Associated Press, Prinz von Anhalt announced that he planned to file a paternity claim.
On April 10, 2007, it was determined by a Bahamian Court that DNA evidence proved Larry Birkhead to be the father of Dannielynn.
