So for the next 3 months or so, this blog will probably see something a bit more minimal than as-per-usual. I'm taking a reduced schedule this June-August from both indieWIRE and (if I can manage to stay away) this blog, for a couple of reasons: First, because I'll be in Europe for 4 weeks beginning June 18th, covering the lovely Edinburgh Film Festival and then galavanting around a few other places. And second, because I have a lost gestating project due this fall that I essentially will not get done without giving primary focus to. The project - a part-time one since last summer - is a small book on the history of Canadian queer rights and issues that I got commissioned to write a while back.
So far it's involved dozens of interviews with some ridiculously inspiring folks from around the country, some of them around in the 60s and 70s and pioneers in gay & lesbian liberation... and others young activists fighting imperative fights a lot of privileged queers are ignoring under the guise that marriage is some sort of holy grail of a final achievement. Meeting them and allowing their stories to help inform my work coupled with the mass amount of supplementary reading of periodicals (like 15-year leftist queer advocacy publication The Body Politic, which tonight I finally finished reading every issue - it took 3 months - and I can't express how great an achievement that magazine was. I highly advise anyone interested in queer history to find a few issues or to check out Rick Bebout's website) has so far been one of the most stimulating experiences of my life, and I look forward to spending the better half of the summer attempting to do it all justice in 140 pages or less.
I'd love to scan a few images from the research and post them here and there, but otherwise this blog will probably not see too much crossover (turning an indieWIRE blog into an electronic archive on queer Canadian history just doesn't seem like a good match)... It also won't see its usual 3 or 4 daily posts, but when September and TIFF and another round of awards season rolls around, I'm sure it'll be back to the regularly scheduled deal.
